You might check the two wires running down to the lower unit for a wire being about in two. I had the forward wire to gradually burn in two after 40 years.Forward got to where it wouldn't hold and finally wouldn't engage at all. The wires go through the exhaust housing in a heat resistant cloth cover that can eventually give out.If that is the case,you'll need a new electric shift cable. I've had great service out of both my electric shifts, one I've had for 34 years and before that,my dad bought it new in 1963.The main thing with these lower units is to run the correct oil in them. Type C or Premium blend.jim
