TOPIC: '58 35 HP Sea Horse shifting problem

Greetings all,

So spring in just 'round the bend and I'm working up to another attempt at getting the "twins" into running condition. When last I left them, I had one motor running well. Started up on the first try, throttled back nice - things were looking good, but...when running, it won't fully engage in gear from the control box.

I can manually engage it to reverse at the motor but neither forward or reverse from the control box.

Any suggestions? Could I have something out of alignment in the gear housing? shift linkage in the lower unit? at the shifter arm? I tried adjusting the ?thumb wheel? on the shifter cable up and down its range to no avail. I looked at all of it and can't figure what I'm missing.

As always, any advice is appreciated.

The other motor starts up but won't throttle back to idle. I'm pretty sure it needs a carb rebuild as no high/low speed adjustments had any effect. Haven't tried shifting it yet 'cause I didn't want to slam it into gear at a high rpm.

what shift box are you using?
mesure the travel of cable vrs travel of lever on the engine.
short lever or long?

Cables attatched backwards in the control box? (throttle cable on shift lever, shift cable on throttle lever)
