I know, I know, It's supposed to be .020, I just changed a set and I can't get the gap below about .080...??? I turn the eccentric screw all the way around... I must have something backwards...??? It was getting late and kinda like the twilight zone, so I just bagged it for the night and went and had a few. Maybe tomorrow it'll all be clearererer....

Check the pivot screw.

If you really want to set the points right you need a Timing Fixture. forget about the point gap. That just gets you near

The motor will start better and run better

Thanks for the reply, good advice, and great pic. I have done several of these and haven't run into this problem till now.
BTW, the coils look like they could be original ('59), kind of orange-brown, marked OMC W. Germany, but they also look like new, no age or cracks. Would you think they could be original, or maybe NOS? I do plan on changing them anyway. Thanks

There is no way for original coils to survive all these years !!-They are a replacement already.---Test them before replacing I would say.-Using the timing fixture is the absolute best way to set the points and will give you maximum spark for easy starting.

Some where on line an AOMCI member has a photo of a board with many of the coils and date used over the years for OMC

I looked and as of right now cannot find it...I most likely will run across it one of these days when I am not looking for it

The West German coils are NOT originals, so that means yours have been replaced at some point. You're likely good to go on that front...

As for the points - are you sure you've got the correct ones? Some of the later points for the "maker" low tension magnetos of the 1970s had different cams and rockers, but will still "fit" older magnetos, making them easy to confuse.

Wow, that's cool. I can't really tell if any of those coils on the board are the orange/brown like mine. If I remember right my '52 10hp Johnson has similar ones, except they have a small gold-foil decal attached that reads 'West Germany'. The ones in the '59 Lark have 'OMC W.Germany' molded into them. I'll try to get some pics. And I did solve the points gap, with further adjustment, see sometimes a couple cold one can shed some light (lol)... Thanks for all the good info!

Those coils don't look like the original-equipment OMC coils that crack with age. Physically they look great and if they're putting out good spark, I don't see any reason to not use them.

Or at least save them for another project if you're gonna put new coils in your Lark.

Upon, initial testing, I got no spark in either cyl. I have changed coils, points, condensers, plugs and wires. So I won't know if the old ones are ok until I test them in another motor, which I'm sure I will.
Interestingly the throttle (butterfly) shaft was set up in this motor, which suggests me that it was probably sitting for a very long time...Thanks for the input...BTW, I didn't think my pics were posting because I can't view them myself...???
