TOPIC: Adding power trim/tilt????

Adding power trim/tilt???? 11 years 2 months ago #82668

Our 'new' 1974 115hp Ev is running great...trouble is, no power tilt (don't much care about the trim ) and for us old folk the lifting of this hoss is more than either of us can do...We are able to launch and retrieve with her down, but if we ever can't in some location, it's a bear to get her up and locked...have to do it on the GROUND...neither of us can do it from in the boat.(that can get a little wet sometimes)..the mechanical 'lift helpers' are all designed for smaller motors so we would like to add a power trim kit. would LOVE to find one that was offered in 1974 if possible but would like to know what's involved? Husband is pretty handy but it looks daunting. I know the 'new kits' are steep in price and then there is paying someone to install...
Found a unit that says it's for 74-79 but it looks like a motor only??? isnt there supposed to be some sort of cylinder system and mounting bracket??? thanks!

There was a tilt only accessory item.
Also a trim and tilt unit with the 2 external cylinders.----There are used ones available of course.-A lot depends on how pateint you are waiting for the right priced units to come along.

I have a '79 85hp Rude and leaks but is quite small of a unit as you can see in the pic, self contained with motor and all, seems very compact. Wonder if it could just bolt on to yours? I dont know what trim and tilt is opposed to just tilt? Whats mine below if anyone knows...On the throttle theres a button for up and another for down, or maybe a rocker switch?

Trim and tilt can be used to adjust the angle of the motor at full throttle. That is done by the 2 short rams.----The middle cylinder is the tilt cylinder. Magic check valves and such direct the flow of fluid.
A " tilt only " unit can not be used at full throttle.
Only a muscle saver when boat is moving slow ,stopped or on the trailer

Interesting, i thought the two short rods were like dampners ;) So much for brain cells.... I saw the parts list diagram, lots of parts in a small package :( . If known, when motor goes down slow on its own is it usually the O-rings or valves, think the valves are a bit pricey as i remember?

Thanks Professor, g3bill

The 2 short rods / small cylinders are the trim cylinders.
2 cylinders are needed on these units to deal with the loads of the motor pushing against them at full throttle.
Interestingly that same trim and tilt unit works on the 235 HP V-6.

Mine has a 25" shaft so guess even more pressure than a 20", Glad I have it though :)

I wonder what happened to "ancientoaks" with the '74 rude? If you got a unit post a pic, ok?
