I have seen a couple of local ads recently for old boats with '50hp' V-4 motors, with the 1960 white, black & red, 'delta' trim, cowl. Any info, that I have read, has always stated that the V-4 50hp was '58 & '59, and in 1960 was upgraded to 75hp. Then was brought back in '64 as a 60hp Sport-Four. At first I thought that someone was mistaken, and it was actually a 75hp. But I've seen another one in another ad claiming the same. So, was there a 1960 50hp, (maybe 1/2 year) or are they really 75hp's? The latest ad is a Salem wooden boat currently in the Rochester, NY C-L. Thanks-Craig

Mismatching of years of production is very , very common.----Many sellers / buyers are not aware of the facts.--I see this all the time and will see it for years to come.----Get the model # , but even that may not be fact because model plates were easily changed.----50 HP was for 58 and 59.

Sometimes a 1960 boat was sold outfitted with an "in stock" 50 hp motor for much cheaper. People just assume because they were purchased together that they are matched by year.

Craig, is this what you saw?

If so it's a 1959 Evinrude V4 50hp Golden Jubilee.

Exactly true. My '60 Thompson was sold new with a '58 Four Fifty.

The Salem wood boat is a '56. (I have several '58 & '59 50hp Evinrude's myself). The cowl in question IS a 1960 V-4 cowl. It is the same shape as the '59, but is white & light grey, with a black (or dark grey) 'delta' triangle trim on each side, and a red stripe... The ad is still listed in Rochester, NY C-L. Or check out the 'images' for 1960 Lark and Starflite II, in Fiberglassics library. I'm going to assume that it is mis-labeled for some reason, or is a 50hp with a '60 Starflite II cowl with the 75 emblem missing...

Just curious, do you have any '58 Four Fiftys or are they all Starflites? The Four Fiftys seem to be pretty rare.

The 75 hp models used a water cover on the cylinder head and the 50 hp did not.

Thanks. I'm always interested in knowing if there are any more Four Fiftys out there. They were probably not as popular because the base motor was a pull start, although a starter was an option.
