I have a '58 SSH 35 RDS-20 that I may need some parts for. I have had it for about 20 years. I had it serviced and running just after I got it, but unfortunately the project stalled out and it has been sitting since. Several years of the time it was outdoors...I know, my bad. Back then compression was 120 & 125.

I am taking it to the local vo-tech school marine repair program soon and they will be able to tell me whether or not it is now an anchor. Labor there is $20/hour.

Provided it is recoverable, what motors could be suitable parts donors other then an obvious '58 SSH 35? For instance, I have recently seen a 1960 (I think) 40 horse for a steal. Would the head, pistons, or lower unit be interchangeable?

Would the '58 cowling fit on another motor like the '60 40 horse?

BTW, I have the parts catalog for the RDS, but not for any other similar motors.

Thanks for any advice.

Well, invested a little time on the ol' interweb and found a site with old catalogs (they sell parts). Looks like the '58 through at least '62 have many interchangeable parts...

Go to Marine engine .com and compare the parts from one year to the next.
www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php

Many parts from 1955 through early 60 are interchangeable from both Johnson and Evinrude.

Cron, Your 58 Super Seahorse hood will fit early to mid 60's Johnson & Evinrude 40HP motors.
Here is a 58 hood that we are restoring on a 67 Evinrude 40. Only the front latch needs to be modified.

Thanks, Larry. That was what I hoped to hear. I see that the gasket(s) under the cover are the same on those models and was guessing that the '58 cover would be interchangeable.

I see more early '60s 40 HPs than '58 35 HPs and might need one for parts or to switch the cover on.

Thanks, again.

Cron yes you can put a 58 ssh hood on a newer motor. iam putting one on a 1962 40 hp. try to go with a 62 or newer. the 1961,s and older have a weak crankshaft. at least that's what ive herd.
