TOPIC: Custom Craft Sighting in East Hartford CT

$2,000?!? 14 years 9 months ago #2678

Gee Jim, Brian has his '63 Manta Ray for sale for $350, and can't get any takers. (I'll throw in a trailer for $150.) He also has the original safety glass windshield and has done the hard work, i.e., split the deck from the hull and removed the transom. He built a new transom too, just hasn't installed it.

2 grand, no motor, no trailer. And gee, don't try to bargain with the guy eh? Heavy duty!

Hey Frank, There is a taker on the CustomCraft, it's me!
I just have to get out there to look and if OK, I'll go home with it.
I'm moving to a new house at the end of the month and can schedule for a weekend after that.......if the rain continues I won't need a trailer, I'll bring and outboard and drive it back!! :-)

If I had a cheap way to get Brian's Manta Ray to Louisiana from New York I'd buy it at that price! All the good deals are always so far away from hickville, La.

I have a 1959 +/- Custom Craft Manta Ray Tunnel Hull boat for sale. This is a rare Fiberglass Classic. This boat will require restoration however the hull is in good salvageable condition.

I realize that this project isn't for everyone. Serious inquiries only are appreciated. Please call 860 289 3536 for appointment to see it. Please do not waste your time or mine in an effort to re-negotiate my firm price.

I wonder if he will include that old Big Twin on the back?

Re:Custom Craft Sighting in East Hartford CT 14 years 9 months ago #2737

theres only 4 mantaray tunnel hulls that i'm aware of,(2 runabouts and 2 ski) 2 are restored. $2k is a bit to steep if it needs a full restoration, but hey, i hope he gets it. it only increases the value of the restored ones.

Re:Custom Craft Sighting in East Hartford CT 14 years 9 months ago #2747

Very cool little boat, nice design and very fast. Custom Craft did not do a very good job sealing the plywoods from what I've seen. I would want to see it, if I did not want to replace wood. If you gotta have one and did a search this one also comes up www.ablboats.com/details.php?id=72933 Claims to be solid, only 40hp, used 10 yr stored 40yr, for a long distance buyer it really gets pricey. I'ld check out one for $350 before spending 2K...CAT*FIN*k

Yeah...but mine was a lot faster and didn't take water over the transom when in motion.

Not to rain on the guy's parade, but this one is still available in Buffalo for around $500.

Not even gonna go there on the water over the transom issue.

not in the 60 mantaray. the tunnel hull is the floor. the later years had flat floors when they added the center sponson. only wood in the 60 is the deck, dash, transom and seat bases.

pretty sure ponyboy's is a delta ray cat. I had one years back. It is now out in Schenectady. There are pictures of it somewhere on this site on still in use when it was leaving our boat yard.

Pretty sure you are correct.

Believe it may be the smaller one as the larger one had headlights.

Re:Custom Craft Sighting in East Hartford CT 14 years 9 months ago #2789

To Ron's point, it's all in the best of fun. My purple top was a 61 tunnel. The one at Frank's is a 62 with the tunnel and pod. 61 was a great handling boat. Ron, that was a 135, not a 125 on the purple one. Pleezzeee.....get it right! Got high 50 mph out of it. But not a boat I'm going to spend a day boating in. Too small and cramped. And Ron, you'll never convince me to use Pettit, any more than any one could convince me to buy a Ford. I use Interlux, and that't it.

Re:Custom Craft Sighting in East Hartford CT 14 years 9 months ago #2791

I guess I need to rethink the selling price on this highly desireable boat. I had set the price at $350 (including the original CC safety glass windshield). That was what I paid for it, less the labor I already put in it. I'll work up the new price and post it soon.

Re:Custom Craft Sighting in East Hartford CT 14 years 9 months ago #2798

well...I know the owner of the purple metal flake mantaray and the history of where it came from....

which he has pictures to show just what you do when a tree has grown through a boat someone has giving you...yea A TREE.

toped off the tree, crawled under it cut it off the stump and brought it home, he been restoring it now for 3 or 4 years and he says he it is done....(heard that before)

told him about rons problem, and he and ron have talked on fiber in the past but i don't think ron remembers him but, here is what he told me to tell ron....

get a BFM than what you have now, there is this phase the mantrays go "through" getting up on plain where they will porpoise and you need some more horse power than what you have to ride through it, once you get past it by going faster she will skim across the water like it on fire.

Not sure if you need a bigger motor, more prop maybe, raise the motor definitely, trim it out and drive through it, (the porpoising).

Re:Custom Craft Sighting in East Hartford CT 14 years 9 months ago #2803

I'm doing a `61 Manta Ray 15, the restore should be done soon. This summer I'll be takin' it to MI and lookin' for another finned cat project for next winter. We've been looking at small tenders, for anchor weekends, they are not cheap. An old small finned cat would work nicely. Customize with a tower, dual controls, casting decks...the King Cat would have a very cool "mini-me" tender that can also explore & fish the flats and bays when seas are ruff. Flats and Bay boats are very pricey and to long. The cost of materials to restore a boat is not bad just take's time. After the boat is restored it's riggin' the boat that can cost ya.

Yes...I would concider 2K for a finned cat project if it was really close or delivered. Already have most of the parts I need. Hope to find a finned cat hull this summer in my travels cheaper.

Re:Custom Craft Sighting in East Hartford CT 14 years 9 months ago #2817

raising the motor is a subject that has been discussed many times. it ain't gunna happen. i'm not drilling new holes in the transom. hopefully i can control it with the trim settings and a few sandbags in the bow. this didn't happen the first 2 yrs. i had it, and i didn't make any changes. now that i'm 55lbs. lighter it will probably be worse. :(

Re:Custom Craft Sighting in East Hartford CT 14 years 9 months ago #2818

Ron,
Some wakeboarders use a ballast bag that fills with water to help with the severe force they can subject a boat do during some of their manuvers. They are made in several different sizes for different weight capacities, with one being capable of 125 lbs costing about $70 from Overtons. You might can even find them cheaper on Ebay. This may be a good alternative to sand bags sine you can adjust the weight by the amount of water you use. Here is a link to Overton's selection of bags.
