TOPIC: Thread Hijacks will be moderated going forward

Especially in the Main Forum, threads are a source of information, guidance and sometimes just general silliness. Occasionally they get hijacked and that's not fair to all parties involved.

The Original Poster's thread ought not drift off into the eternal question - Mercury or Johnson.

People following the thread see new activity, take the time to go to the thread, only to find that it's one person telling another about something personal or totally irrelevant.

Hijacks can often be good stand alone topics that we can all benefit from but if they're buried inside a totally different thread they're of no use.

So - just as they do at iBoats - we're going to mod hijacks. They won't just disappear - but they may be edited - you might see a notice advising you to post the hijack as a new topic - or be prompted to conduct the discussion via Private Message. The main forum is not the place for two people to be discussing personal business or things that are of no interest to the general group.

This isn't meant to be heavy handed or onerous - it's meant to keep things on track and make this site more beneficial to us all!

This policy has nothing to do with the G3 forum. Aside from the fact that they're running their own shop...Lord knows thread hijacking is the bedrock of that board :~)

Hopefully, we can find some "happy medium" with this, or maybe another change in life we just have to get used to !? I do understand and agree with what you're saying Peter, it sometimes gets totally off topic and almost pointless sometimes, aggravating to readers and infuriating to posters I'm sure. Dave also has a good point, I think today's phrase would be "a buzz kill". It really changes the mood on the forum, hard to explain, but hope you know what I mean. Maybe the first warning could be a little less harsh (trying to choose my words carefully), leave the post and just insert the warning??? Just my thoughts, we'll have to see how it goes I guess. One of the main draws to this great place is the friendly atmosphere, I'd hate to see that change.....

And Brian, go sit on the time out bench! LOL

Fair point. Dave and I have PM'd and he made much the same comment. It was the first edit and could have been handled differently.

I second that emotion! I feel better already.

We're all in this together. The effort to stem hijacking is an effort to increase the usefulness of the forum and to preserve some sense of decorum.

If everybody just stops and thinks for 5 seconds before posting something that isn't related to the thread... hijacking will be eliminated in our time :~)

I'd say take it to NBR from this point since the topic has nothing to do with boating. I guess someone could continue their jacking of the topic there.
