Ive allways liked these boats, I grew up on a small lake in N central IN, and even later in Florida I had several of these. though mostly powerd by 35-40hp omc I had 1 with a Flying Scott 75hp that ran in the mid 40s. have fun with this,Oh and what a cool engine, a short shaft johnson, very rare. Whats the hp on that? 55-60?

Thanks, 1969 Johnson 55hp Commercial.

I've been out sanding down the crazing and gel-coat. Just about ready to apply the filler, as soon as the temps get into the 60's.

Dart,

The Arrow is the sister to the Ranger (Econo-Models).

I laid a tarp out on the yard and rolled it sideways to get it upside down. Then four of us, lifted it on two a couple of cinder blocks, with a 2x6 going cross. None of us are as young or strong as we used to be, but it wasn't bad to lift.

P.S. Thats one nice lookin boat ya got there friend!

Sometimes you gotta get creative, Dart! I used a come-a-long on the bow eye and an engine hoist with a socket extension thru the splashwell drain to flip mine;

I see some trees in the pic of your Arrow (good looking boat, btw), any big limbs nearby? :)

If you don't know how to use filler,.....You will learn fast!

Mix, Apply, Sand all of it off, and try again. REPEAT!!!!

As for the 69 Johnson 55 hp. Well we did some wiring. Then replace impeller and some seals. Sanded down the ICKY white stuff, and sprayed some sealer on it.

Its probably not worth the effort (or money) to fix it, but I want to at lest try it out before I trash can it. If it works well enough then it will get the treatment later.

Finally a coat of GEL. Man do I suck at this. I thought the gel-coat would cover up some of the pin-holes and small scratches, but once again I am WRONG.

Remember kids ANYTHING you can see or feel WILL show up after the gel-coat. If you want it to go away you have to work harder at it.

P.S. Gel-coating with a roller and brush in direct sun light is a NO-NO..... Live and learn. Its only money and time.

Here's the proof. NO I'm not a proud boat owner. SHAME on me.

WANTED: Any extra Gel-Coat and Sand-paper I can get my hands on.

Good news I noticed this morning that the Gel-coat is starting to flatten out. The really bad areas are looking a heck of a lot better.

My spirits are much better after seeing this.....so back online to order more Gel-coat. Never give up....NEVER!

Yeah, I've been there- With paint, not Gel-, but it's the same principle. EVERYTHING has to be perfect, or it will show up later... Those little pin holes, minor scratches, etc that you think at going to fill just don't, and tend to look worse in the process!

Gel is a pain, but forgiving. Sand, Sand, sand- And it will be smooth, shiny, and look like new!

It's 85 degrees out no wind, and NO RAIN in sight! Looks to be a perfect time to apply another coat of Gel-Coat to the Starcraft.

Mix it up, brush it on. Step back. Admire my work. Then NEEEERTTT!
NEEERRRTT! The NOEL Weather Station in Duluth is under a Sever Weather Alert. Strong winds, hail, and heavy rain, are due in the area with in the hour.

WHAT????? Panic sets in. Run in the garage and grab the step ladder and dolly. Slip old conduit together to make a long pole. DUCK TAPE it to the ladder and dolly. Scream to the wife COME HELP!!!

Toss the tarp over it and clamp everything I can down. The temp drops to 65 degrees in 20 min. The skies turn UGLY!!! Please let the Gel-Coat set up enough so the tarp doesn't stick to the boat. Winds start to pick up a lot. Please, Please let the Gel-Coat hold up.

Scary Stuff!

The start of the final polish on the Gel-coat for the bottom before flipping. Once again not perfect, but a heck of a lot better than it was.

CLICK ON THE PICS FOR FULL EFFECT!!

Before

After

Now I have to get fixin on the trailer so I can finely move it around. I'm like a kid at Christmas. I just can't wait to start on the upper parts. Those are the parts that people can see what you have done.

Never give up, NEVER.

The work you have done on your hull looks just great. Believe me I have seen alot worse and I have done It really bad myself the first few times I tryed to do what you are doing. You have done well with all the crappy weather and such. You will end up with a fine looking boat when you get done. Keep up the good work, Skip.

Great work and coming along at a good clip. Pray that is won't snow the next few weeks. I have a sister in law up in Bovey where the ice never gets off the lake until June.
Keep us posted.

Nice lookin' crew. Put oars in their hands and you won't need a motor. Another page in the book complete. You got it right, all trailers are equal once they are under water. It's the dogone sitting in the parking lot that somehow makes 'em look rusty.

She's looking GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good looking crew by the way. The trailer looks great. Gotta love Black, it hides everything. Wished I could have gone black with mine but I wanted to stay true to it's original color, hence the white and then sand beige for the fenders and a few other parts

Pumped up is right! I got the trailer adjusted to the boat, and started to wash it down. Once you get some of the moss and dirt cleaned away it starts to make you feel that this is do-able.

By the way those Flipin Fairies in the picture, the youngest one is graduating tomorrow. As for the other two, she's been married for two years, and the boy, well, he got stationed in Hawaii (Tough Tour).

But even so they all are waiting to go for a ride in the "NEW" boat. Along with the oldest (not pictured) and their three son's.

Wow! Four kids, two son-in-laws, three grand-children, and a wife. MAN! I think I might need a bigger boat. Oh-well better get this one done so I can start shopping for another.

Do you think the Queen Mary is considered a classic?

NO NO Noooo,Don't get a bigger boat! You need to get another smaller one that needs an entire makeover. Two is better than one, besides what would you do with all the spare time when you close the book on this one?

Thanks Frog!

We survived the flood with only a small amount of water in the basement. I feel very fortunate, many others didn't fair as well. It will be a very large undertaking to clean up this mess, and fix the roads and homes that were destroyed and damaged during the storm.

I have been blessed with Gods kindness once again. Remember to never take any day for granted.

Even the ones spent sanding and buffing!!!!

Update:

Mounted up my 1969 Johnson 55hp Electric Shift. I tipped it up and stuck the scag in the soft dirt and had my wife balance it as I tipped the boat up and backed it up to the motor.

Fit right up to the holes right away. No little blonde girls where hurt in the making of this boat (YET).

I got everything connected the next night. Then borrowed my neighbors water muffs and fired it up. It started up in about two revolutions and ran like new.

I couldn't get it to shift, but I found that I had a bad vacuum switch that sends power to the shift solenoids in the lower unit. Ordered up a new one, and its on its way.

I next bypassed the switch and found it still wouldn't shift, it just stays in forward default mode. Then I tested the wires for current and all was good. Then I tested the solenoids and they checked out good. Now I was just a little confused.

Went back in and read the repair manual again. Now it tells me I might have not lined up the rods in the solenoids right. DANG IT!! Now I have to pull the lower unit of again (3rd time) and reset them.

Well this time I think I will try and do it blind folded, that way if it still doesn't work I will have a better excuse as to why.

Stay tuned kids....... This could get ugly.

P.S. If this Johnny doesn't start behaving soon I might have to send it to Uncle Neil's, so he can use it for target practice.
