Hi,

Does anyone know the worth of a matching numbers 1956 Mark 55H ? It is in un-restored condition. Re-painted { looks horrible } original color was green. It even has the factory Carter carbs that were mostly replaced by Tillotson`s. Quicky + propeller are there. Has not run in decades.

I am thinking of adding it to my collection but I normaly buy motors that I will use at some time.

Thanks,
Taco

Wow there is some serious gunk in that fuel bowl. How about some pics of the entire engine showing the lower etc.

The lower units are the pricey thing to fix, I'd check the gear oil as it looks like the tail cone has been off where holes are dinged up. Pretty much all the parts are now avail because of reproductions but again pricey. Gears and shafts are what cost, the other parts liike seals, bearings, tail cones, are not too bad.
Your gear case looks pretty good ,needs skeg welded, not a big deal. It does look like a later case because of the ridge leading to water intake. Hard to tell about prop but lots of those are around.
Motor if a real 55 H will be the 40 cu in block, so look for Merc 300 parts as those were 40 also and are more common than earlier mark motors of that size. In general the power head parts are way more available as long as yours has the peculiar to the 55h parts, the carbs and flywheel, distributor linkages.
The wrap is damaged and good ones are getting scarce, does faceplate have 55 H on it? It should.
It does look like a great motor to restore but check for some of these other things to figure a value, I. Would have thought less than a 1000 as good restored motors are sold from 2 to 3 thousand depending on how accurate they are......price is in the eye of the beholder and motivation of seller......

63g3, Thanks for your comment. It is not a motor that I really need and all the parts for a restoration has to be bought and shipped from the USA to Europe so ery pricey. The seller wants around US $ 1,700.00 in the condition it is. I think I pass on this one. If someone is interested in purchasing I will pass the sellers info. Shipping from Germany to the USA is about $ 600.00 excl. taxes.

Thanks, Taco.

only 55H's with the square top would have 55H on the faceplate.

Dave or Randy,
Would the '56 55H lower pan have the badge "powered by the famous Thunderbolt engine" on the starboard side - or no badge??
And,...
What part(s)of the distributor linkage are unique? Pictures??

Hello Doc,

There is no badge on the lower pan. My standard 1955 Mark 55 has one. Also included a picture of the distributor { I quess}

Thanks Taco.
I guess I'll need to dig out a pan without the badge or TIG in the (2) holes.

On the throttle linkage,...I'm still not understanding what is unique - unless it is the parts related to the crash throttle, seen in the last (2) pictures??
