TOPIC: Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars

Re: Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #124858

Not even a guess but it's a nice looking little toy. At some point there was a Biker or a Mexican involved though. How else do you explain the chain link steering wheel ? :)

Styled after an XKE ?!? Might hint to British manufacture no ? I was thinking more late 50's Corvette myself. :)

Might be Italian and styled by or after a Ferrari.

Cool little boat no matter what it is.

I'm rolling on that. A bit of a hike (Flint to southern Ohio), trailer might be an adventure.
But like like Puppy said in Mad Max.
WE GO!
It will be mine.

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #124890

not too bad of a drive. I won an outboard on e-bay in Flint once. Left Cincy at 6 AM was back home by 2:30 PM. But then again ? I wasn't pulling a trailer I knew nothing about ?

Make sure to take plenty of pictures once you start working on it.
Good Luck and safe travels once you strike a deal !

Why not contact the Ohio DNR and track down the registration number? That ought to tell you the manufacturer and year.

GIT ER DUN :) That trailer looks a lot newer than the boat. Maybe a grease gun for the bearings and some tire inflator just in case. Good luck, I can't say it's unique but WOW is it different !

Split the hull and beef the heck out of the transom, add some knees and drop a 50 HP or so on it.

Looks might you could need to address the head lights and the way they are mounted....Looks like they are Siliconed in place now..

Let the fun begin.

It's an impala craft avenger. built in Ont. Canada. Sandy has one. There is several out there and even a web page for the boat.

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #124991

They are coming. It's been raining cats and dogs here since I got back. Not going to be doing any rigging anytime soon. I haven't even been able to tear out the old knarly carpet yet to see what horrors await me!
:<D
I did do a quick outside wash job, thats it though. It was a pretty boffo green metal flake originally.
I think I will see how much of the sprayed on too thick Yellow paint will just blow off with my power washer.
I would like to think I could get that original gel coat back. Probably dreaming on that one..
The bow is up waiting for the sun to do it's job.

Don't be surprised if you do get the gel coat back. The hull on my G-3 was white and burgundy until I hit it with the power washer. The white paint literally blew off revealing a cream colored factory gel coat finish. Shocked the you know what out of me but apparently a lot of people don't prep it right and the paint never really adhere's. You might get lucky. I liked mine better white though. :(

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #125523

I did see that.
So far I have torn the carpet out. Let it sit bow up in the (unrelenting!) sun.
The lady I bought it from said her and her former husband split the hull and did the floors and transom.
I believe they did. BUT, I think they ignored any stringers/cores that may have been underneath.
I say this because I can dig a little under the floor and easily grab old rotted wood pulp :<( And the floor is just Marine ply. No glass
The hull is super solid though. Looks like I will be splitting it again. Heavy boat for it's size. As per the norm I think some of that is water logged wood below the floor, but really this boat seem's to be quite well built. The glass is thick.
I will post pics and play story time when I get started. Right now I am more than knee deep in other projects, Totally rebuilding a 351 Cleveland 4V (72' "CJ") into a 71' Torino G.T and a "Mid-West" Gw Invader knock off that I have the hull split on right now.. My wife(!) and I really dig this boat. I can't wait to get going on it!
The heat is slowing me down!
It's hot for mid Michigan this summer! I love the heat, but man! :<D

The Cleveland's the big block and the Windsor and Michigan's were small blocks if I remember my Ford's. That 4V designation has always puzzled me. Most say it means it's got a 4 barrel carb but in french ads it's written as 4 vitesse and I believe that means "speed". Never figured that one out. Since you like the red and white motors are you going Starsky and Hutch on the Torino ?

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #125544

On a 351 Cleveland the heads are totally different between 2v and 4v (two and four barrel). The 4V heads have 2.19 inch (!!!!) intake valves, huge "sewer" ports. Same basic head as the Boss 302.
The motor SLEEPS until 2500 rpm and then they come on like they are on a turbocharger. It's a scooter in a "old car" way.
BTW the Chev 454 has 2.19" intake valves. Think about that...

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #125545

Did you know the pistons on some 74 cubic inch Harleys are interchangeable with a 396 Chevy ? Hmmmm... LOL :) I've always liked the Cleveland. My favourite truck motor by far. Tons of bottom end and almost bulletproof. My old boss had a pair of them in a 30 foot Pacemaker Flybridge and for a tank that thing could go alright.

Firstglassproject,
I have never seen a 351 Cleveland in a Ford truck from the factory. What year were they supposed to be in a pickup or truck?

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #125549

The boss's F-150 at Sparks Windows had one when I was 17 so that would have been about 1981. I think it was a special addition trim package (XLT or something like that?) but I always thought the motor was stock. He'd had a couple strokes so I doubt he swapped it out.

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #125553

You may want to take a look at this article in Wikipedia on the F series pickup from 1980 to 1986. Scroll down to the table of available engines and you can see that there were no 351 Cleveland engines in trucks during that period.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_F-Series_seventh_generation

The 351 C 4V engines had exceptional high RPM airflow, but didn't have a lot of torque at lower RPM so Ford kept them out of trucks and marine use.
You may have been thinking of the Windsor version.

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #125556

The Harley 74 has a 3 7/16 bore I think the 396 has something close to 4" bore have built a lot of harleys in my life they also have a big dome on the harley piston the only 74 with a flat piston would be from the 30's to early 40's flat head

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #125557

The 351 Cleveland was only produced from 1970-1974.
The 351M and 400 were a similar design but had almost no interchangeable parts with the 351C.
But we digress.....:<)

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #125561

Can't remember which but I thought it was a neat tip. I know it wasn't the knuckle because I tried it on my 47. Bob Very from B&D Restorations built a few of them and he specialized in Flatheads and Knuckles so I'd say you're right.

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #125562

No, don't digress :) I don't know what year the truck was, I just drove it in the early 80's for work. If it wasn't a Cleveland we put a lot of wrong stuff in it and it still worked.

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #125568

With apologies to Chuck in Cincinnati for thread jumping, I agree with Clyde that this portion of the thread should end, and with the facts that Ford never sold a 351C in a truck or boat, and there is no way you can put a 4 inch piston in a 3-7/16" bore.
Firstglassproject, you may want to do a little more fact checking before you jump into a thread.

Re:Any Guess what it is ? 700 dollars 8 years 4 months ago #125569

Yeah. Nobody ever customized anything. I drove that truck for years but I admit to getting the Harley tip second hand from a builder. Now I'm off to the garage to take a look at my mechanics new toy, a mid 60's Cadillac Fleetwood limo with the turbo diesel from a Ford truck in it. Have a great day. This is known as a Big Block Harley and uses Chevy pistons and valves. Built in 1984 by a guy with imagination. And this is a Cadillac that can't exist either.
