TOPIC: Outboard suggestions?

Outboard suggestions? 8 years 9 months ago #120178

I have a question about my 1963 Starcraft Comet boat. The outboard is a 60 hp Evinrude that runs pretty well but has trouble planing with 3 or more people. I'm considering on buying a newer motor. Of course the Evinrude is a large and heavy motor. What would be the best choice for brand and horsepower? The boat is very light in weight. 750lbs. Thank you for your time.

before I would buy a different motor, I would try some different props, and maybe trim your 60 hp and see if that can help. just my 2 cents. greg

There will be lots of help here with experts on the subject. My more basic comment/questions: if you like and enjoy this motor...looks great and runs well, would it be possible that a smaller pitch prop could give you a few more hundred rpm's and (punch) to plane the boat out better without loosing too much top end? Also, would moving a gas tank from back to front be possible? Also, and heavy items like anchor or battery that could be shifted forward to help a bit. I have never used flat trim tabs or one of those fins for the motor (to help planning), so I will let other pipe in on those, or motor suggestions.

Nice rig - best of luck. Would be cool if you could keep your package original and still get it to perform how you want.

Thank you for the information. My prop is a Michigan #012045. Aluminum, Diameter 10", Pitch 12", 3 blades, rotation is clockwise. I'm pretty sure it is original to the motor. 1963 Evinrude 60 hp.

What would anyone suggest as a different prop other than this one to possibly improve the planing for the boat. When it's planed out the speed it about 34mph. I'm not looking for more speed just quicker planing. 34mph feels pretty fast for this boat.

Thanks,
David

Prolly a 10 1/4 x10 would be about right. If you were going to load heavy, a 10 x 9 would give it more take off power. The 10x12 is too Steep of a prop for that boat and motor combo.

OK, I purchased a new prop. 10x9 1/4, #012042. My question is, is it correct? It fits but is smaller for the outside diameter. Please see photo. I assume it is correct and need to buy a smaller prop nose.

Thanks for your help. I just don't know much in this area about props.

Hi, I wanted to say thank you for the recommendation of the 10 1/4 x 10 prop. I put one on and the boat and motor did very well! It ran and planed great.

That's a heck of a lot cheaper than a new motor:)
