TOPIC: Alumicraft F7 transom

Alumicraft F7 transom 9 years 7 months ago #108368

I am replacing the wood at the transom of my 14' Alumicraft rowboat. 1" on the interior and 1/2" at the exterior. When I removed the old wood there was a piece of paper, cardboard, tarpaper or something between the aluminum and the wood. What is this for? Do I need to replace? If so with what? Thanks.

minnesotafox, I do not know why there would be anything between them. I would not put anything back cuz it might soak up water and cause damage to the new wood. just seal up the new transom good and bolt it on. greg. I sent you an e-mail also

minnesotafox,

It MIGHT be that the builder used preservative-infused plywood originally & the tissue was to keep the preservative from corroding the aluminum.

Thanks for the thoughts. The stuff was brittle and about 1/16" thick, light in color. Like you said it doesn't seem needed.
