There's a good mechanic who's starting to help me get my boat ip and running. Its a 1966 Chrysler 105 HP motor. Hasn't run in 15 years and I'm not much of a mechanic. He told me to make sure I put the air filters on the two carburators. Well I don't see any in the manual I bought. I've looked at pics on line and Youtube videos. Everything I see is open, just like mine. So.... Air filter or no air filter?

My outboard does not have one either I am sure they were not worried because they are not run in a dusty environment. Not sure I like that idea though. Trouble is there is not much room under the hood for one and you do not need to choke the motor off of air because of restriction through the filter.

Much appreciated. Trying to feel better about no filter before I get it going.

Outboards do not use air filters. Some use airboxes to quiet intake noise, some use a screen just to keep junk out, some go bare. Just keep in mind, a few motors will not tune properly without their carb "covers" in place, needing that little bit of resistance to even out intake pulses at lower RPM. My manuals show no intake covers or screens, so go bare.

I think you need to find someone that knows marine engines and outboards in particular. Someone that suggests to add air filters to an outboard does not. Get a manual for that engine and study up. There are things that if screwed up with ruin an outboard quickly.
