TOPIC: Remove G3 from trailer

Remove G3 from trailer 13 years 3 months ago #44922

I want to remove my boat from the trailer in my garage so I can send the trailer out to be sandblasted. Looking for advice on removing it.

The boat shop told me to put the tongue on the floor, put cinder blocks at the stern, lift the tongue and the stern will now be on the blocks off the trailer. He said then to put the tongue on the hitch and pull the trailer half way out with the truck then prop up the keel and pull the trailer out.

Have any of you done this?

I wouldnt use my truck but Ya that works just fine, old tires-styrafoam blocks etc. the boat only weighs 400lbs or less, If unriged-no motor etc. if your rafters are showing you could probly just lift it straight up with a come-a-long,block & tackel, 2 buddies and a rope!

There are as many ways to do it as you can think up.
That said,
I would think in reverse or further down the road.
Getting it off the trailer is not the only challenge
Getting it back on might be.
Solve the end game first and your less likely to hate your original setup.
Also, truly depends on what is in your arsenal.
  • Gotta fork lift
    Cherry Picker
    Come Along
    Floor Jacks
    Foam Blocks
    ect?
  • If all I had was minimal stuff.
I'd check the front roller first, see how much aft travel there is before the hull leaves it. If it is minimal, I'd either add an extra roller between the first and second or supplement with some PVC pipe.
Make sure it is atleast 1/4 wall material.
Next, I'd get a bunch of foam blocks from my local trailer supply store.
I got a guy down the street that gets more than he can get rid of when new trailers are brought in.
Old tires can work, but they can also compress with weight.
I wouldn't take the trailer off the truck, just leave it there.
I like knowing something aint gonna move!
Roll the boat aft a couple of feet, get someone to help you lift it high enough so only the very front of the hull is touching any roller,
support the aft end with the blocks, then gently pull the trailer out from under it. You may need to balance the hull from rocking.
Of course, support the front before the hull fully leaves the trailer. If you get height right, rolling the trailer back under it should be a cake walk.

or, you can over kill it, like shown below....

Wonder what type boat you have? and if tilt trailer. I would never use cinder blocks imo as I'd hate to damage the hull. As stated above tires work well, I use a moving blanket to protect from scuffing.

Thanks for the advice. It is a tilt trailer. I have a trailer store next to work so I'll head over there today.

A G3 without a motor mounted on it is a relatively light boat, about 400 pounds.
Removing it or replacing it can be done by two people. Just do it.
Here are some pictures of myself and my Son moving my G3 around during the
    period I was refinishing it.

Another vote for straps and hoist! With the floor and stringers out my wife and I lifted it from the cradle and placed it back on the trailer (and she's 5'5" and 110 pounds!).

Ok here is what I made up to lift boats. All you need is some pipe and elbos and tees and some pullys and 2 winchs like on boat trailers. plust somebody with a threader or weld it like I did.

    PS
I made 2 of these you put a strap under the boat and hook to both side of your hoist
