I'm going to add a tach and an inline fuel filter. B)

Elgindave: Very good idea to install an inline fuel filter. I have been caught twice disabled on the lake because of NO inline filter. What happened on both occasions very small flakes of the rubber coated diaphragm in the fuel pump flaked off and lodged in the carb needle valve flooding out the carb killing the engine. I have found in every Homelite that I own (9 total) the diaphragm is cracked and flaking off.

In one of the instances the diaphragm actualy cracked and fuel
was being pumped into the crankcase. The motor would still run because the fuel pump was able to keep up with the demand of the motor along with the leak into the crankcase. How I found out I had a problem is I checked the oil and fuel just poured out of the dipstick hole. I estimated the oil was diluted with an additional quart of fuel. I ran the engine for probably an hour like this. Motor still runs fine with NO decline in compression. I bet the inside of this engine is very clean. These are tough motors!

I have not been able to find replacement diaphragms so I take the best one I can find off my motor inventory and use that one.

I have installed an electric fuel on one motor that works great.

If you zoom in on the last photo you can see the black flakes of diaphragm in the filter.

Greg,
Mine has a sediment bowl too. But a filter is the best bet.
After you telling about getting fuel in the crankcase I'm going to start checking my oil often. Don't want any premature wear.
The photo in my 1st post was right after I got my Homelite home. It was laying on a trailer under a tarp in a barn. The lower unit had a big hole in it. Got a replacement from Bill R.
Wonder if he has replacement fuel pump diaphrams?

Greg, that's interesting about the fuel pump diaphragms. Since I'm relatively new to these, in two boating seasons I've not experienced a problem. However one engine was running an electric pump, the second engine which saw one operating time had the stock pump. I will have to put a filter on as insurance! Thanks for that info.

Haven't done much with anything yet, still have a lower unit to reassemble for the seventh engine. I put a tach in last year but have since acquired a factory tach that I'm planning to use when I replace the dashboard wood in the boat. I'll also install the correct ignition switch and get rid of the separate choke button. Hell I might just replace the late controls with the early ones and get rid of the dash ignition switch altogether.

I haven't sold any yet, I'm just collecting :) I did have a sale on my 85hp that went south and I'm actually glad it did after having out last Oct and how good it runs now. No tiller that I'm aware of.

Elgindave: All my motors have the sediment bowl also. The screen in the top of the bowl is course enough to allow passage of the small rubber partials I spoke of.

4-stroke: Do you need a wiring diagram for that factory tach? It hooks up to a Homelite controller very easily. You do not even have to run any wires back to the engine. They all go to the control.

Dontheboatguy: I really don't sell motors. I purchase and refurbish only boats that look good with a Homelite on them. Taking a motor out of stock and rebuilding and painting as necessary.

Greg,
I see what you are saying about the coarse screen.
Would there be a way to wire a reg tach at the control box without running an extra cable? I guess I could run 3 wire TV rotor wire. I have a NOS Teleflex tach for 4,6,8 cylinder motors (4 cycle).

Greg do you plan on attending the AOMCI Tomahawk meet?
I made it there the last 5 years. Oops. Except last year. Went to Alaska instead. Planning on going to Tomahawk next year.

Yes I do plan on attending the Tomahawk meet. I have not attended the meet before. I plan on bring one or two Tomahawk boats to sell.

Greg

I think you will need to run wires to the motor for installation of any other tach other that an original Homelite tach. Here are installation guides for "Airguide" instruments that may help you with your Telefles Tach.

Thanks for the Air Guide info. The Teleflex tach is well marked on the back for the wiring. This unit won't need a transmiter box.
Pos, Neg, Signal (neg side of coil) I think these were used on I/O Bayliners in the 80s-90s.
I hope to attend the Tomahawk meet next year. Hope to see you there. I'll look for Homelite powered Tomahawks.
In 2009 a guy had a Bearcat for sale. He wouldn't come down much on his price so I passed.

If my old style fuel pump gives out I will look into an electric unit. :S

Re:Winter projects Homelite/Bearcats ? 13 years 11 months ago #22395

Mark: A very good guess! I used a Facet #1102. I was after a pump in the 1 PSI range as to not over pressure the carbs forcing fuel past the system and into the motor or out the overflow holes. (If fuel was able to getting past the needle valves) If everything is working like it is suppose to a 3 PSI pump would work fine also.

Greg, the instructions were pretty much on the tach. I've tried it out and it works fine. Pretty slick that you don't need the extra wire.

What is that thing attached to my fuel pump? Some sort of fuel pressure regulator? Do any of you guys have one on your Homelite/Bearcat? I never fooled with it. I don't think I will either. Wonder if it was something the past owner put on?

Dave, never seen anything like that on any I have or have seen. You might be right it does look something like a regulator.

Took a trip today and bought more stuff, two powerheads, controls and complete stuck engine. More parts!

Continuing on with more projects, looking to see what I've bought. Torn down two stuck powerheads. These little suckers sure do come apart quickly. Both blocks look salvageable, light rust in the cylinders. One bad crank and rod. Put a rod bolt into my slide hammer, screwed it into the rod, a few taps and the pistons came right out. Cams look good. Should be able to build one decent "A" block engine out of these two. Third powerhead turns but appears to have a bad intake valve in #1. Check out the hand controls and the tilt/trim. Very strange, looks like it may even had a tiller mounted to it too!
