TOPIC: Homelite power tilt

Homelite power tilt 13 years 11 months ago #23382

Hi all,
First time poster on Fiberglassics. I haven't quite got the hang of this web site yet so please bear with me.
(The Story)
In 2004 I bought a 72 Bearcat from a gentleman in Minnesota.
In my correspondence with him, mention was made that the engine came with power tilt that was original equipment. The main castings have Homelite markings. Any forum members have any info? I bought a Homelite tach this last summer and the gentleman I bought it from said he also had an instruction sheet for the Homelite P/T with Fisher Pierce letter head he was going to send me also. Never happened. If any of you forum members know a thing or two about this power tilt unit I would very much appreciate hearing from you.
Also is there any collector value? I don't need it as my 66 Homelite
is mounted to my Boston Whaler via a Chrysler power TnT.
Thanks,
Tom from Rubicon,WI

Tim:

Could you post a few photos of your power tilt unit. I have never seen one in person. How much would you think it weighs? I would like to put one on a boat that I have but am already near the max weight on the rear of this boat.

I have a factory tilt unit, and I think the paperwork too.
Pop me an email to remind me and this weekend I'll dig it out and get pics.
Bear in mind these are tilt, not trim and tilt.
I have used Panther and CMC for tilt/trim several times.

The Homelite tilt I have is totally different than the one that was for sale on Ebay that Bill posted. I'll have to take some photos and email them to Bill to post here.

Re:Homelite power tilt 13 years 11 months ago #24116

Notice it is on a Bostom Whaler. If I ever get one I would have to use an after market one. CMC. It would offset my motor to give it more clearence which I need. As of now I can't raise my Homelite all the way up in the locking position because the hood will hit the back railing on my pontoon. :( I can tilt enough for trailering.

Don,
I only have one complete unit and it's promised to someone already.

You can use a CMC or a Panther. I will check my other computer in a few minutes and post pics of the tilt trim I've adapted using either Panther or CMC units.

Tom forwarded me pics to post for everyone.
This tilt unit is interesting, I once saw one of those arms in a photo but it was laying in a box and I had no idea what it was for.
Would be fun to see the pump arrangement and the starboard side of the motor. Is there a second ram on the stbd side Tom?
The Homelite mysteries keep coming!

Then there's the do it yourself unit!
Only one hose to these homemade rams, I put air to the one that is still attached and it does seem to work.

Too funny Dick, there are 4 versions of power tilt and or trim on here now. I'll add the fifth and show my Panther bracket in action later tonight.

Someone went to a lot of work to do that! At the fwd end, the ends are beveled for clearance of the transom bracket when it is raised and if you look closely there are zerks for greasing that end. It's the aft end where they lost it............must have ran over budget and hired the low bidder to finish it!!! :P

With a little re-engineering this could be made to work......maybe next winters project.

Thanks for posting the pics Bill.
The tilt casting is symmetrical so starboard side is the mirror of port side. Both sides have hyd. cylinders for a balanced lift. I'll go out in the blizzard today and take more photographs of the pump and anything else that looks interesting.

You didn't tell me you tried it and it worked.
Some of that innovative fabrication ;)

The older I get, the harder it is to tilt that sucker up.

Not sure if my 17 Uniflite will carry two of these engines or not but worth a look to see. I got enough to put one more together.
I think I sent pictures of it.

Never tried it till this thread got started so I was out there one day and thought I'd see what ti did with some air. It's crudely built but could be cleaned up and might actually be made to work. Too many others to work on so it's a ways off.

I still have your motor mounts for the Black Cat

I shipped our own Dr. Anderson my Bearcat power tilt unit today.
So knowing him it won't be long before we see it looking like new!
(I've never seen it work so sent it no charge pending it actually works)

Bill: The Power tilt unit showed up yesterday. Today (3-11-11) I put some power to it and by gosh it works. Found the installation instructions you sent with it and come to find out I have installation instruction with photos in my collection of manuals. Will get new hoses made for it. Need to figure what color to paint it to mach the next boat.

Thanks A Million!

Looking at the photos Greg posted it doesn't look like it would be too hard to machine up the hydraulic cylinder. I used to machine prototype cylinders for the Volvo Penta outdrives.

Greg, good chat we had the other day.
Did you ever try out the power tilt?
I forgot that we had talked about that so long ago, geez this thread is from 7 months ago.

Bill:

Thanks for the call. Always fun talking to another Homeliter... As far as the power tilt after having confirmed it worked I packed it away for that special application. I am building up a Lake N Sea for my daughter for use on Lake Superior. It might end up on that boat so she can beach the boat easily.

Good plan. Is the Lake N Sea a short shaft boat or a long shaft boat. Don't see many of those out here. Same for MFG.
Lots of Skagits though!

Re:Homelite power tilt 13 years 2 months ago #48469

Lake N Sea is a short shaft..unfortunately. All the boats I seem to be attracted to are short shaft boats. So far I have built up five short shafts Homelites. I have gotten five short shaft setups through you. Bought a short shaft motor and traded a short shaft for a long shaft. I have two short shaft setups left to be installed. That gives me seven short shaft Homelite motors total. The master plan is to build up a boat with a Homelite motor and sell it, moving on to the next boat. Well...the building up the boat part of the plan has been working. The selling part of the plan has not been going to well. When setting the price for my boats my goal is to recover the initial cost plus materials. I have included NO labor, and I still can't sell them. Maybe next year! Right now my main problem is storage. I hate to pay money to store boats that I can't sell. My main problem might be storage but my real problem is explaining this concept to my wife.

Greg,
re the Chrysler tilt, I had a call the other day from a guy that said they installed a Chrysler Tilt unit on a Homelite. But, when you match up the Chrysler bracket assy to the Homelite side by side, notice the Homelite clamp spacing. The 55 will sit above the Chrysler assy if it just slides onto the pivot pin as is (he said it did). He also said it raised the engine "around 3inches". They had problems with ventilating prop on turns, then they overheated the engine several times at speed from having the water inlet above the water at speed. They did not want to cut the splashwell down but will have to, according to him.
I'll try to get pics, but you can see in Tom's post how high the engine is. Not saying you can't make it work, just saying something from the field crossed my desk that you may want to consider.

Couple of things about the Chrysler unit, the swivel pin is larger so you would need to rebush the swivel bracket. The swivel bracket is longer by 5/8". If you look closely at Tom's picture it appears the bottom leg mount is notched to make up this difference. As far as it being higher, I haven't got that far yet. If nothing else for the $ invested into this (experiment) conversion, the tilt cylinder looks the same as Greg's unit and if it's the same length could be used in that application. How does the cylinder at the bottom attach to the Bearcat bracket?

Thanks Greg for the pictures, I kind of thought that was how it attached and thought that's what the two drilled and tapped holes were for in the vertical swivel bracket on the late engines. Looks like you'd need to drill and tap the overhead holes. All of the brackets seem simple enough to make. If you get a chance at some point could you get a measurement of the cylinder from eye to eye open and fully retracted?

Is the Chrysler unit power tilt or power tilt/trim?
