Hey guys, I got this mail from a fella seeking some advice that I know nothing about. I'll leave it up to you gurus.
Cal

"Looking at a tach for my 59, 35hp evinrude lark..no generator magneto only..and the tach im looking at is an Airguide from the era and says..For capacitor discharge ignitions....it sounds right but I dont want to buy something that wont work. I figure I can connect to one of the magneto connections on the key switch?"

Depending on how old the tach is, most of the airguides need a seperate unit, either half moon shape or square, for it to work. Also, the tach is specific to the engine. For most of the old johnnyrudes and gales, the tach will go from 0-6,000 rpm. The tach should have a number on it, don't remember what the right number is, but the range is good for 99% of them. For some of the "newer" airgudes, they can be used for multiple motors. Thes will have 4 or 5 screws on the back, as opposd to 2 for the others.

Hope that helps.

It's the 675 and has the transmitter....Looks like it can be used on a lot of motors...

Sounds to me like he needs a model 653 for a 2 or 4 cyl magneto ignition

Hey BL,

Don't think it will work. It's for capacitor discharge, you need magneto. As Jim said, looks like the 653 or possibly the 664 may also work.

If you haven't pulled the trigger yet, i may have one i can sell you, but won't be able to get to it until the weekend to see.

Use this link for applications of Airguide tachs

www.classicboatwork.com/classicparts/gauges/airguide/airguideinstructions/Airguide%20Tachometer%20Application%20Guide.pdf

I'm not sure if that was the link already posted or not. Sorry if its a repeat.

Some I have looked at have the number at the very top of the face almost hidden
by the bezel. Perhaps post some pictures of the front and back and folks can help.
I really appreciate you going to all the trouble. Hopefully one of them is THE ONE
