TOPIC: 1950's Simplex Twin Motor Controller

1950's Simplex Twin Motor Controller 9 years 8 months ago #106378

Hello all,
I am looking to rebuild a twin motor controller for a pair of Big Twin 35 Evinrudes.
It is a Evinrude Simplex unit.
I have the housing but I need the correct levers, someone must have lost the original levers and tried to make the three unique to this controller levers.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated !
Thanks,
John

Hey Mahgony,

As an FYI, 2 levers are the same used in every other 2 lever system of this type. The 2 middle levers are the ones that are different, both in how they are "bent", and how the geared side is oriented. Obviously, it is those 2 levers that are hard to find. If you have the original middle part though, you are WAY ahead of the game.

The 4 lever was made by taking the 2 lever apart, putting in the "middle part" with the unique levers, and then putting the original outside plates of the 2 speed controller on the outsides, essentially, sandwiching the middle part.

The levers you are after would look like this.

Actually,
As seen in Andy's diagram above, three of the four levers are unique to the twin controller.
Bill's far right lever is not the correct lever for his box.
The only lever shared between the dual and single boxes, is the one closest to your hip.
I believe I have found what I need, hopefully!
Anyone know what color the Evinrude boxes were painted in the late 50's?
And, what color the forward, reverse, slow, fast decals are supposed to be, red or black?
Thanks,
John

Thanks for pointing that out John, it appears I installed the levers backwards. No problem though, has to come apart soon for the cables. Here's another set I have

Here's a set I cobbled up from two "single" units.
It's workable for sure, but would LOVE to have an original box......anybody ????
I had to tweak one shifter and one throttle lever so they would pass by each other.
Bill.
