On the '72 65hp Evinrude I had picked up cheap the controller was trashed and there were no buttons for the hydro shift so I improvised over the winter using a couple different switching setups. I ended up with a setup using a three position push pull light switch that I had in my parts drawer. Off/stern light/nav lights. I wired it up so the stern light would be neutral, the "off" position would be forward and the full pull out would be reverse. Put a different diode in the system and she works like a dream with no shut down lurch forward.
I put the rest of the ign system on the dash using other spare parts. The key for start and acc, a push button choke, and a two position push/pull switch for engine kill (mag short out). Just to show all is not lost if your controllers are trashed.

Wow, that's a slick job. Really has a classic look too.
