TOPIC: Coil for 58 fat fifty

Coil for 58 fat fifty 9 years 6 months ago #109411

I believe my Evinrude is a 58 and I need a coil to get it running. Anyone know of a source or have a good extra around for less than the $200 for a new one? I can get the serial number if that is needed. Thanks for any help.

The ebay item id given is invalid, no result has been sentAlmost $220 at Marineengine.com!!!!

www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0580243

I recall when they didn't even cost $40! There's some inflation for ya!

If your motor fires right up but after a while stops then won't restart until it's cooled down, (and you're not overheating), most likely the coil is shot. Years ago I fought an old 75hp V4 and kept replacing the mag coils with cheap used ones. They were all shot! Got a new $40 coil and it ran like a Swiss watch!

If you can find a used purple or blue coil, it might have a chance of being a good one. I'd stay away from an original coil with clear or brownish-type of insulation, chances are it'll be bad.

Here's a few on eBay:

Here's your Deal of the Year, NOS Sierra replacement coil for $39.95 shipped:

Better grab that one before it's gone, it ain't gonna be on there long!

Cheers............ed

Thanks for the heads up, I grabbed that one off the bay. Much more in my budget than $200+. I really appreciate it!

Thanks, but I never got your email. Hopefully the coil works and we can get the thing running. It's been a while I think. I will let you know.

Nice looking '58 Fifty. Yours is the first I've seen with the Evinrude 'E' still on the front cover! Now I know what it's supposed to look like.

That's not the real "E" so you still haven't seen one. The previous owner faked it with tape. It is the shape of the original "E" though. Now to get it running.

I've been looking for one of those "E"s too for my '58 Four Fifty. They're so simple. One would think making one would be a piece of cake IF the right material could be found.
