I'm thinking about buying this but if you know me, you know that I know next to nothing about outboards. Do these engines have a reputation good or bad? Any idea of fuel usage? Any advice would be appreciated.

What year is it? 1970's 149ci motors didn't like regular 87 octane and sometimes fried when using 87 and cheap oils. Later 160ci motors were more tolerant. Personally, I would not run ANY V-6 of any brand or hp on anything less than 89 octane and slightly rich (40:1) mix with synthetic or premium manufacturer oil. Fuel usage isn't bad if you keep the throttle back from full, just like any other motor.

Buy the motor if it comes with the hijacker then dump the motor and keep the lift. IMHO

Are you buying the boat for the motor, or is the motor on a boat you are thinking of buying?

I have no idea how old the motor is but I'd guess 1970's. Here are two photos with the cowl off. Maybe somebody can tell me what I'm looking at. I also need to know how I tell the year of manufacture. There must be a tag somewhere with a date or a code. Where will I find it? I'm thinking of buying the boat, motor and trailer but if the motor is a clunker, I'll probably pass.

Go up to the first post and look at the pic. On the motor's transom bracket the I.D. tag is clearly visible. Post the model and serial numbers if you need help looking the year up.

by looking at that ignition system.. i'd be thinking 76 - 78
76 was the first year for the 200.. and by 79 the ignition system changed..

Unfortunately, the motor is 600 miles away and there is no one available to read the tag on the engine for me. If we can assume that it is a '76 to '78 Evinrude 200, is this engine a good one, so-so, bad? Is it really a 200 HP engine? Thanks

Yes and no. Back when motors were rated at the crankshaft, it was 200hp, plus or minus 10%. Like Mercury, OMC liked to be on the optimistic side, so think 215. Modern propshaft rated hp will likely be around 175 or so. If it checks out and runs OK, run it with quality oil at 40:1 and it'll give you good service.
