I am looking at buying a boat with a short transom. and I have a really mint 1967 big twin 40, but it is a long shaft. now my question is what parts do I need to convert it to a short shaft? and what years will work? this is a gear shift motor. and do any of you guys have the parts that are in good condition. thanks frog

Frog for that job all you realy need is the shaft. just remove the spacer and change the shaft. well I gess that you need the short shifter rod to. (ive been working in eletromatic to long) good luck Bob

Hey Frog, I have the entire lower unit, including shaft and short shifter rod, for an early 60's Evinrude 40. Don't know if it's the same, but I suspect that it is.

I've seen the shifter setup 2 ways, one long rod, and a rod with an extra long brass connector/coupler. If that's yours, then you just need the shorter rod connector and shaft. If not, then you'll need a new shift rod and short connector.

If want the lower unit and short connector, let me know. You can have it for shipping and a little extra. Only problem is I may not be able to get to it for a couple of weeks, so if in a hurry, I'm not your guy.

Let me know, and good luck!

Oooops, yup, sorry, forgot about those! I'm pretty sure I have those also. The gales only have one, but petty sure the johnnyrudes had 2.

Cooling tubes are the easy part, a pipe cutter and ruler will do the trick. 5" off the top end. The lower ends need the bend?

yep, as I recall - which is proving to be less reliable as I get older, the bends are at the bottom. :)
