TOPIC: Correct spark plugs?

Correct spark plugs? 9 years 2 months ago #114984

I'm going to try new spark plugs in my 1979 55 hp Evinrude to see if it helps before I start trying other things. I posted in the forum here about it starting great but dying at takeoff. The plugs in it are Champion L77J4 and that's what the tag on the wire recommends too. I went to Wal-Mart to buy Champion plugs with this number on it but the closest thing I could find to the same number is QL77JC4. These were one of the very few on the shelf that were in a "marine style" package. Will these work?

The q series plug is a inductive suppressor style plug while the standard plug is a resistor type plug. The q series I do believe is what is recommended as first choice in newer data.

A suppressor sparkplug has a small coil of wire that restricts high frequency AC current as the spark jumps the plug gap. It doesn't affect DC current. A resistor plug restricts both AC and DC current and weakens the spark energy.

Many many many years ago back in the '50's I had a 1937 Nash Lafayette that had an original am radio. Old spark plugs would cause static while the motor was running. Installed resistor plugs and the static went away.
