TOPIC: Need help identifying a part - 59 Johnson 35 hp

Need help identifying a part - 59 Johnson 35 hp 8 years 10 months ago #118784

I think these are electrical connections, but I don't see anything that looks like this in my manual. There's a mercury cutout switch listed in the schematic, is this it? PO had bypassed this, is it important to reconnect it?
These are located near the throttle linkage.

Hard to tell from the illustration, but it looks like it might be. If so, for $10 I'll definitely replace it. Thanks.

Dave, that's a merc switch. You're right. It's a safety switch connected to the vacuum cutoff switch. The cutoff switch prevents the motor from over revving when in neutral causing damage. It shorts out one of the magnetos. I have several close up pictures of the engine if you need some help.

Thanks, Cal. PO has the vacuum switch hooked up, but bypassed the mercury switch. Do you know if that is #42 in the illustration? Are they easy to replace?

Probably the same switch. The motor I had was a '57 RDS-20 that's what the wiring diagram is from but looks like they are almost the same. The ebay link that in the previous posting looks like a good buy and free shipping. It's just a bolt/screw on part, very easy to change out.

So, I bought the part off of ebay. Great vendor, not really sure how he made any money off of the part.
Anyway, after I got it I realized that it's a single mercury switch, and mine's a double. Apparently, manual start used the single switch and electric start used a double. If I understand it correctly, one keeps the high vac cutout switch from kicking in at full throttle. The other keeps you from being able to start it at full throttle.
I think I can remember not to start it at full throttle, especially since you can't even go full throttle in neutral. So I'll probably just go ahead and wire this one in for the cutout switch. Am I missing anything?

Sounds like you have your ducks lined up. It's a safety thing. Good luck.
