TOPIC: Temp warning question

I would like to put a red warning light on the dash along with the buzzer in the shift control. Engine noise and poor hearing don't make for a good warning. Can I put my small red 12v light in parallel with the buzzer? Present buzzer has a purple and gray wire going to it. The small light is polarity sensitive so it must be wired correctly +/-. What color would be + ?

wouldnt you should just be able to put a light in with the buzzer.. i'd look to see if you can tag into both wires for the buzzer.. maybe make where those wires split and operate both.. but also where they will still work if one or the other fails.. like dont put the light inline with it.. this way if the bulb was bad.. the buzzer would still work.. and same with buzzer ..
if you understand wiring.. what im saying is easier than it sounds with me trying to explain it..

My intention is to use both in parallel, buzzer and light.
The wiring is easy, just wondering what color wire goes where. The 12 volt led light is polarity sensitive meaning that + and - must be correct, If wired backwards the led light will not work...nature of the beast. I suspect the gray wire is the "hot" one since it also goes to the tachometer. Would the purple wire complete the circuit when the motor temp sensor trips?

Since you have access to the wires on the buzzer, temporarily connect a 12V battery across it. If it sounds, you know which is + and which is -. If it does not sound, reverse the leads and that should do it.

Thanks for the input Jerry and I tried that but the buzzer is not polarity sensitive. It buzzes no matter what wire is on + or -. What I am going to do is put 12V on the engine connector plug to simulate a completed short (hot) circuit and just temporally connect the light to the buzzer wires to see which works. Hate crawling under the dash to change wires once it is all installed.

Pretty sure the purple wire is power (hot) and the grey or tan is ground (from the sending unit). I used the Cole Hersee alarm & light on my GT-150, liked it a lot better than just the alarm!

I simply added a head temp sensor and guage on the dash - so I know the actual temp, instead of waiting till it is too hot.....

Simple add on.

led's are polarity sensitive. hook it up . if it does not work reverse it. I have done this on many aplications .it will not hurt the light if that is your concern. Scott

Thanks Scott. I've got it hooked up now. Did the polarity test using a battery and found out which wires go where.

the wireing diagram for my 1966 40hp shows that the gray wire is the ground. Bob
