I have a '59 Evinrude 35hp BigTwin, without electric start. I also have a doner 'frankenstien' motor which is a '56 30hp Johnson. Although the starter bracket does not look original on the '56. I had started the doner motor. I made the swap and fired the '59, but it sheared the flywheel key. Is there a difference in BigTwin flywheels? Or should I just double check the torque...??? I would note that the starter from the '56, has 10 teeth, and my other BigTwin starters have 11 teeth...??? But I'm using both the starter with the flywheel from the '56, and it seems to engage just fine. As always, any help is greatly appreciated..Thanks-Craig

Craig I think that the 56 flywheel is not balnced right for you 59. I know that the 40hp has 2 diferent fly wheels. ive had motors that shered the key becuses the flyheel nut was not torqed right. Bob

Thanks Bob, like I said, I'm not sure that the '56 had the original set up or not. I guess I'll post the part #'s, and maybe that would tell something...Thanks again-Craig

The '56 is also 6 Volt, so if you applied 12V it would give the engine a good spin.
Shearing the key probably a result of low torque on flywheel nut.

...thanks for the reply. Actually the starter is a 12V, so it's probably not original with the '56... I have several '55s with 6V start, I didn't realize the 56's were supposed to be 6V, I'll have to look over my other 56's. I just picked up another '56 30hp Lark today...
