Hello
Just picked up a boat with a Johnson Javelin.
Where is the best place to look up the year and hp for this outboard.
I have been digging online but haven't found anything yet.
model rje-18c
serial 1489096
i'm thinking a '56 30 horse.
Are these a good reliable motor and how about parts?

Almost all of those big twins are good motors If it has been half way taken care of.
Here is were to find your motor and year. Scroll down to the year and you will find it.

Neil, there's some interesting info in the link below on identifying the older Johnnys:

Don't know if it will help or not, but worth a try.....

Thanks guys
If this turns out to be the original motor on this boat that would be way too cool.
1956, hell Elvis may have rode in the darn thing!!

Surprisingly enough, NAPA still has a good selection of parts available for olde Johnsons and Evinrudes. Most of the current parts counter guys won't know this but they do. If you can find a "seasoned" parts guy, he'll have a better idea of where to find things. Also as I recall, the parts are carried under a different "brand name", I don't remember what though.

Thanks again guys.
This brings up a few scenarios.
Is it the original motor that came on the boat and has been well maintained to run so long. 54 years!!
Has it been reworked a few times?
Is it low hours and has never been cracked open?
All questions for the previous owner for sure.
It still seems odd to me that the boat and motor would still be together for that long. But thats just me.

One thing to remember most place you can only run a boat 3 months out of the year and you use the boat how many time in that 3 months. So maybe the motors only got a years use on it. Now compare that to your car. So you got a motor thats just been broke in. And a good motor you don't change out that offten.
