OK, after looking at Clark Savages thread I got concerned about how my"Fatty" is mounted. Didn't want to steal his thread. Below is how mine is mounted to the Clipper so I guess I need some reassurance that it's ok to do so. Mind you this is how it's been mounted from the day it was bought. Doesn't mean it's right but just need to know please. :unsure:





What do you think/

Your 50 is mounted correctly. Those brackets are NOT NEEDED on the fat 50.
Too much wrong info is out there.

Looks OK to me. But I'll have to look at how mine is mounted on my Larson All-American, Transom clamps and two bolts at the bottom. ;)

The '58 "Fat 50" had transom clamps, the '59 60 I think had brackets. The '60 75 was a different block and lower unit and had brackets. At least mine did. The best of all worlds is the '60 75 with the Fat 60 hood.

In 59 they came out with a 60hp, in 60 it went to 75hp yes they used brackets.

Show me a 59-60 HP and a model # of a 59 -60 HP
All along I thought that 1964 was the first year of the Johnson 60 HP.

My 59 V-4 Fat 50 (which is for sale) has transom clamps not a bracket set up like my old 100 HP Meteor did.

Thanks, I am. Well with a few mods. I still have to install that upgraded reed valve assembly that Bruce sent me. Also I found a pair of 60HP heads on Ebay for $29.99 plus shipping. From a guy down your way by the looks of it. I'm going to have them milled and put them on and hop up the motor some. I posted it in the 1968 65hp thread last night, the one I started a while back that got the hop up idea started. I also sent a separate E-mail to Bruce with the questions I had.

I'm wrong. '64 was the first 60hp. I had one once, so then the 58 - 59 50hp had clamps, Everything else (4 cyl) had brackets.

wait..... you can jack these motors?? get a bit more bite out of em? I was sort of fearing the HP to weight ratio of this motor on my G3 (mine is a short shaft). What kind of additional HP are we talking about and what does it take? Pint me to a thread or send me an e-mail

After 10 years of fooling around with the pre '68 V4 engines, I've come to the best conclusion for my needs is for use a 100 HP engine with the bottom pan and hood of an earlier engine. The old Evinrude lids will fit over the 100HP powerhead - but barely. I don't know if the Johnson lids will. The 90 & 100HP engines used an inline 4Bbl sidedraft carb - different than the downdraft 2Bbl "toilet" used on the 50 thru 85 hp engines. I had to shorten the length of the idle needle valves on the 100 carb to make it possible. I then went a little wild on the Starflite I lid. I shaved the emblems and had the seams and carb door welded closed. I found some cool "100" emblems for a tractor - they look period correct & are stainless. I stole the rear script emblems from a doner motor, and these will be mounted on the front. All the parts to do this bolt right up, if you know what ones to use. It'll make a pretty nice sleeper, and is bound to hurt the ego of a few Merc owners. The 90 & 100 burn significantly less fuel than any of the 2 Bbl motors, while making more power from the same cubic inches.

Many years ago I ran and old 62 - 75 HP looking motor.
Inside was a 66-100 HP engine. That engine was bored out 0.060" and fitted with 1970 115HP pistons.
I was asked a number of times after passing people with similar motors ----" what year is that 75 HP "
I always explained what was actually in there.
Point is the OMC V-4's of the 1960's are wonderfull as far as interchangeability from year to year.
That has all changed in todays world.

Now you tell me! :ohmy: Just kidding, I do think I need to keep an eye out for a 90 or 100 as a back up for this motor then. If it dies I can still use the pan and lid of the Fifty Jubilee.
