Hi guys,
I have a '59 Evinrude Lark 35 hp that was stuck when I bought it a while back. Pulled the head and exhaust cover off and have been soaking the cylinders down with every type of penetrating oil to no avail. Tonight I heated up the stuck piston and cylinder with a propane torch and used a large wood dowel and hammer and it slowly freed up.

I can move the pistons up and down with the wood dowel and hammer, but still can't get them to move by turning the prop while in gear. Flywheel is off so I could check out the coils, points, condensers so I can't try to turn it over with the starter. Is there anything else I can do to make it turn a little more freely or do I have to keep at it with the dowel and hammer? I assume the only way to see if the wrist pins and bearings are rusted is to do a complete tear down.

At least one of the rings looks to be stuck as well. Don't know if this one is salvageable, but I've gotten this far and would like to see if I can resuscitate this one.

Thanks for your help.

Put the flywheel on and use one of those " flywheel turning " tools.
If you know what an outboard looks like inside ( roller bearins and such) that you would be taking it apart for inspection.
Rings are likely jammed in the grooves by aluminum oxide too.

Thanks Professor,

I'm sure at least one of the rings is stuck so I may have to take this one all the way down to fix it. What is the "flywheel turning tool" you mention? I'm not familiar with it.

It is a tool that grabs on the starter ring gear.Used to turn the motor over and to hold the flywheel while torquing the nut.
See your snap-on dealer.
I have more than one as they are very handy.

I use a homemade strap wrench that uses an old serpentine belt.

Here is how you can make a flywheel wrench. Easy to make using 2x2 and some kind of strap.
