I am a little confused. The engine pictured looks like a 1973 or so 65hp. But you say the Ebay item is a 1968 55hp - which is it? If it is the 68 55hp, then I think that engine has the elctric shift, which is fine if you get the controls and everything works. Parts for this are pricey if they are missiing/not working. Also need to make sure no water in the lower unit.
