Hello,
So I just wanted to see what everyone else thinks on this matter.
61starflite loads up at idle and after shuting down, too start it up again I have to put it at full throttle, starts rough but after 50ft or so it comes right to life and runs fine until i slow down to 1/4 throttle then it starts loading up again!
I think it's the reeds not closeing properly or even broken?
What do you guy's think?
Thanks Matt

Sounds to me like the low speed is out of adjustment, the high speed needles are fixed on this motor but the low can be adjusted. Start by gently seating the valves in the closed position then open them both about 1 1/4 turns. This should get it started. After the motor warms up adjust them to best idle and all should be good. If you haven't had the carb rebuilt best to start there.

Thanks Al,
But I've done all that, the PO actually stored it the right way and the carbs where very clean before I cleaned them. I haved worked on and own quit a few first gen v4's, I just haven't had one full up with fuel this quick before? When I went through it I never checked the reeds that's why I was thinking that. maybe I will crank them in to like 3/4 and see if it makes a deference? I think I'm also going 50:1 instead. of 24:1, I NEVER SCENE THAT MUCH SMOKE BEFORE!
Thanks Matt.

Solved the problem!
Al was right, the low speed. For some reson they where very worn out
and keep spinning out and flooding her out.
so I put different ones in and runs like a champ!
guess I don't know everything lol!

ALL V4 engines should be run at 50:1 no matter what "experts" tell you. Contrary to what people think, using excess oil WILL hurt the engine by creating excess carbon causing the rings to stick, and the exhaust ports to clog. Each needle valve has a brass packing nut that has packing washers under it. The washers are under there to seal the shank of the needle screw, and to prevent it from backing out due to vibration. The brass packing nuts should be tightened enough that turning the needles takes a little effort.

Yeah,I've got a 62 Starflite 75hp,and every once in a while it'll start idling rough. What goes bad are those cork packing washers in the idle needle assemblys.New cork washers with a little light grease applied, and don't over tighten the packing nuts,(just enough to keep the needles from going out of adjustment)and it idles nicely again.
