TOPIC: Reproducing nameplates for Cutter

Reproducing nameplates for Cutter 9 years 10 months ago #105383

Working on my first fiberglass boat, a 1959 Cutter Jet DeVille. Got the deck cut off and soggy transom removed. It's going easier than I expected. Taking lots of pictures I hope to post later. However, I've struck out trying to find replacement Cutter nameplates for it. After stripping two coats of paint there is a faint outline of the nameplate which I was able to trace. Now I'm trying to find the best way to make reproductions. I thought maybe water jet cutting some Stainless plate to match the other hardware but would appreciate any insight into a better method. Cost is also a factor. I've even considered having a decal made of a contrasting color if all else fails. The boat will be painted red to match the Mark 75 that I'm putting together. Hope someone out there can help.
Thanks, Jon G.

I have the Cutter name badges from my Jet DeVille. Since it is stripped down bare, they are already off. They have some mild pitting, so they may not be the best for making a mold...even if I knew how. Not sure how else I could help out. Any suggestions how I can assist you guys?

In the meanwhile, I will try to take a couple pics and upload them.

Been going crosseyed reading articles on casting script. It's quite a process involving many possible release agents so as not to harm the sample. Looks like doing some sort of polymer would be the simplest but chrome plating would add a lot of cost. Saw some nice work done with cast brass but again chroming adds cost. Even though the original script was chromed I think SS would look good with the Vollrath hardware. I'll send out copies of my tracing this week and get some prices on water jet cutting. Hope it's reasonable.
Cron78's pics reminded me of something else, my step pads are very deteriorated. Those should be easy to cast. More research needed though. Thanks for the input. Jon G.

Nice find on the Cutter Jon, and welcome aboard. You might check with Larry at Vintage Boat Works (Bakersfield, CA) on the logo's. I think he was re-popping some Larson and maybe other side scripts.

Nice looking boat Jon, good luck on the build. Is that motor a 73 Triumph looper 65hp Evinrude? I've seen those name plates some where, hanging in a shop. I can't remember where?? I will keep thinking.

Regarding Casting Plastic Emblems, Greg from Madison has perfected the process. He is a perfectiuonist and knows his restoration business. You may want to contact him for some insight.

We reproduce vintage boat emblems in SAND CAST BRASS and trim in SAND CAST ALUMINUM. Sometimes small script does not come out perfect in the reproductions.
I have Cutter Emblems in stock that I can reproduce.

gene, the motor that came with the boat was '69 55hp 3cyl. electric shift. Too new for me so I gave it to a buddy in the Pine Tree Boating Club chapter of AOMCI. Had our annual meeting/dry meet today and scored big with more Vollrath SS hardware. 4-streamlined cleats, 2-transverse winged cleats, bow light with flag pole, 2-step pads, and the original hatch latches. Don't think I'll sleep tonight.

Hey plummah, can you post photos of the hatch latches? I have wondered just what was original on the rear hatch. What was on my DeVille was definitely not original. I've seen several different configurations in photos on the web.

Cron78 I've had a hard time finding pictures of the hatch latches. Don't remember where I found it but pictures of a restored blue Cutter with a white Merc400 has very similar latches to mine. I'll try to load both pictures. I can't tell if both are here cause I can't get "Preview" to work.

Here's a picture of the latches I got today. How the heck do you load more than one picture at a time?

Post the first pic like you're doing now, then hit the "edit" button and add another pic. Post that, if you want a third pic added repeat the process. This can be repeated many times, not sure there is any limit on the number of pics in one post.

Find a business that has a three D printer. Or a local high school that has project lead the way engineering. They can take a sample of your name plate an recreate it in moments on the #D printer. At the last school I was at, they made a nameplate, parts for the keikafer lever and a globe for the lights that had dry rotted.

Dave Hammett has already done this, he has the molds and made a set for me for my 59 Jet Deville about 8 years ago. Dave founded another Class Glass web site that is no longer up and running. Maybe someone reading this remembers Dave and has his contact information. If so, sound off!

Old thread, but new to the party... Who is reproducing the Cutter script?
