TOPIC: ID this boat and year?

ID this boat and year? 14 years 5 months ago #10683

I got this off a guy for 100.00 and I have no idea what it is. The floor and transom are solid as it has sat inside for the lasy 25 years

All I can make out is a small metal plate that says Crownline Onarga, IL

It is 14 foot and feels real light...is a 50 HP to big?

From looking around it looks like a 1957 or so Crownline X-600D Deluxe Runabout

Looks like you got a heck of a deal there! I wouldn't think 50HP would be too much, IMHO.

Welcome aboard!

Well, my guess is that it's a boat made by Crownline Mfg. Co. of Onarga, Illinois.

Crownline started making fiberglass boats in early 1956 with Arnold O'Hare at the head of the firm. The fiberglass know-how came from Tommy Thomas of Hayward, WI.

In June 1959 the firm incorporated as "Crownline, Inc." They moved from Onarga to Cairo, IL in July 1963. The Feds foreclosed on the firm because of default of a SBA loan and a liquidation auction took place 13 July 1966.

There are brochures here on this site in the Library section.

I wrote an article on the company history which has been submitted to "Classic Boating" for publication. I don't know when or if they will publish it.
