You are correct, most are outboards.

I have one customer that has a '64 model with a 6 cyl 140 MerCruiser. His steering is on the right. If your steering is on the left, then I assume it isn't MerCruiser powered.

Glasspar Seafair series boats were 17 feet in length. Can you post a pic, I would like to see if it is indeed a Seafair.

Re:need info on my glasspar seafair 14 years 10 months ago #1160

Very few were I/O of any brand. I assumed you had something other than a MerCruiser because of the LH steering. All the MerCruisers were RH rotation and so, the helm is typically placed on the right to counteract prop torque.

Volvo had LH and RH rotation, so a LH helm would make more sense.

Also, the 1st Mercruiser 4 cylinders were 110 HP units. The 120 came out about '65. I would like to know the serial number of the engine & drive you have. Maybe the boat has been repowered?

CHRIS: Does you boat have a transom stamped H.I.N. serial # on upper right .? It is quite possible you own a mid 70's LARSON cuddy cabin at 19 1/2 foot.?, when they took over Glasspar.
Very similar to the early 60's Seafair of 17 1/2 ft , but slightly stretched.
.LEFT HAND STEERING WHEELs were mostly installed at the dealer at the REQUEST OF A LEFT HANDED CUSTOMER for more CONFIDENCE of operating the SHIFT / CONTROL BOX. .Talk to early dealers that were in business at the early days of boating.
. Try using a dockbuster Merc lever box with your wrong hand. !!
Maybe only 1% of the time does it have high speed or boat hull TORQUE advantage.

The early Glasspar Seafair Sedans were 17.6 ft long and were made from 1959 thru 1967. The later ones were made by Larson and they continued to call them Glasspar Seafair Sedans although they were a very different boat and were a bit longer and wider. The earlier boats were available in outboard and I/O models. One could request a left hand steering station when ordering a boat from the factory. The earlier boats have become very desirable to collectors. They perform very well and are considered one of the most outstanding models of the Glasspar boat line. Brian

I am still looking for a MerCruiser serial number for the engine and/or outdrive. It should be 7 digits long, no letters. It will start with a 1 or a 2 from that vintage.

Re:need info on my glasspar seafair 14 years 10 months ago #1490

Maybe try and make your FB album open to all for awhile until you can figure out how to upload pics here.

I'm thinking based on the brochures in the library here that you have a unit built with a 1968 mold that was custom configured with the steering on the left by a dealer.

The 1969 model molds look to have the step strakes in the bottom of the hull that you noticed yours do not. The step lines were not in the 1968 molds. Also, if you are missing the mahogany splash rails on the sides of the hull then it is most likely post 1967 Glasspar.

I do have the mahogany splash rails. Supposedly the LH steering wasn't an option on the later sixties models, but makes sense if it was dealer customized!

Oh yeah... my whole profile SHOULD be open to the public right now. I will go back and make sure everything is public accessible!

Re:need info on my glasspar seafair 14 years 10 months ago #1492

Ok, I checked your pics and you definetly have a 1967 or earlier Glasspar built model. The splash-rail is there. The windshield is of the Glasspar type (with the aluminum trim caps on top). The cabin door trim on the left is original, but the right side has been changed. If you strip the paint off the left side you should find some beautiful mahogany.

The length threw me off, but I am more familiar with the outboard models and don't know much about the inboards. Interesting they stretched the hull for the inboard then.

Cool.

P.S. My model is a 1967 with the same brown gel coat.

Mike
