TOPIC: Mercuiser 888 Ford 302 engine. What is this thing?

So the wires that go into the little square galvanized box have no insulation left on them. They are so old the insulation is falling off leaving them exposed. They both enter a loom anout 8 inches from the box. Thinking about cutting and soldering new wire on or maybe take the little box off and open it up and replace the wires from there or maybe just replace it? But either way I sure would like to know what it is and does?

Just took the engine out yesterday.... thanks in advance,

Just guessing that you will find two lugs with the wires connected. Easy to replace.

The little box is just a junction point for the two wires. Problem there is nothing attached to them, they terminate at the connector? Look to be tapped into black and the brown appears to be original? Any idea what brown and black wires are used for in the older mercuiser engines?
