I found my Grandpas boat building books from the 50s. He built 4 boats in his basement from late 30s to late 50s. I will try to attach some pictures of covers and 2 boat pictures. Sorry if they are poor quality and maybe upside down. I built my Glen L marine Tiny Titan 8 foot Hydroplane in 1978 in high school wood shop using some of Grandpas original tools and some modern tools. Dad tought me how Grandpa did lots of stuff. Though he was not around when I built mine, Dad passed on the connection and live of boating. I found Grandpas hand written notes in the magazines and even materials list. Priceless stuff to me.

How neat is that!! What a treasure to find. Glad you could share with us.
I remember back in the 50's when our next door neighbor in SB actually buiilt a 26' sailboat in his back yard. all mahogany. There were bung plugs by the heaps around the whole thing. He named it Jack Tar and I believe his daughter is still sailing it. Saw it at the DC boat show about 5 years ago tied up where the tugs are now.

This is what was in that reply mail my Dad received in 1953. A letter and a 100 year anniversary guide for painting. Company established 1853. Copyright 1953. The book is glossy and like brand new. There is a boat chart in the middle that calls out each product to use in each area. Pretty racy picture on the back for 1953! My Dad was 20 years old and was refinishing one of his Dad’s boats when he was sick with TB.

Wow - very nice work and cool boat. When I look through all of my 1950s magazines, the show lots of families with their home built boats like you just shared. There must have been a lot of home building going on between the 30s to 50s. Drilling holes and counter sink holes with Brace and bits. Hand screwing each brass screw. Dad said he would get blisters helping grandpa because he was still in school for the first boat. Said Grandpas callouses were so think from working in the Steel Mills since 1919. He built 4 boats in the basement in winters and then removed the staircase and turn boats on their side to get out. I know he had to hit his head on that low ceiling as he was taller than the floor joists above. I also remember a 2hp champion hanging on a post.

More stuff. Plans to build waterkis, boats, etc. I like the cabin for under $2,000. Let’s all build one. One of those plans almost looks like Robby321 Dad and Brother built family boat.
