TOPIC: Elgin 40hp

Elgin 40hp 4 years 7 months ago #142313

Went to look at a 58 Johnson 35 today. Ran great, but his price was high in my opinion, and the paint job here did was less than desirable for the money. But, he has a 62 Elgin 40hp he said he'd sell me for $75. He said he had it running, but now not getting spark. I've only worked on Omc. Are they difficult to work on? And, are controls hard to get? I just glanced at it, but it looks a lot different. I think I'll take the chance for the money because it would look great in my 59 Owens.

I think Elgin is part of Scott Attwater and Scott McColloch ? if that helps ?

Elgin was a Sears brand name. They were built by either West Bend or McCulloch. I would guess the 40hp would be a McCulloch. Do you know the model number?

I have a master parts manual for 1960 Scott McColloch line of motors which is for Scott, Elgin, Hiawatha, and Wizard.
The Elgin 40HP is sold by Sears. model numbers 574.60440 (manual start) 574.60450 (manual start extended shaft) 574.60460(electric start) and 574.60470 (electric start extended shaft) if you need info on this let me know ?

With my only experience being with Johnson/Evinrude is the Elgin that much different to work on? And are the controls hard to find. It would look great on my boat but I'm considering waiting for an Evinrude to come along.

I decided it's too pretty to pass on. For $75 I can't lose.
