TOPIC: Cobia Half Cabin Restoration

Cobia Half Cabin Restoration 4 years 3 months ago #143247

Thanks for the add! I picked this fun little boat up this last weekend and started started the restoration. On the title it's marked as a 1967, but I found a Colorado registration under the floor that has it as a 1973. What year do you guys think it is?

As for the restoration I have to rebuild the transom, the floor, and patch a couple of spots on the hull. This will be my first boat restoration. I hope I am not in over my head...

Also there was a 50hp Mercury Tracker on it. I might go back and buy it. If we wanted to go tubing or maybe take it out off the coast of San Diego, is that too small?

Thanks everyone. I hope to learn a lot here.

Jake

I would imagine 50 HP would be enough to get a small boat like that around nicely. It's a cute boat and looks just right for your family. Good luck on the resto!

Hi Jake, welcome aboard and nice find she should be a great project. I like those "pocket Cruisers" as they're called. Yeah the 50 should push you a long fine, not a lot of speed but should cruise nicely. Me i'd find an 80hp or so but I like more speed. ;) I'm not sure of the year, our Glassic Library only shows a '65 and '71 brochure. I'm guessing very late 60's but not sure. Not real familiar with the early Cobia's but someone on here should probably know and chime in.

Thank you for the info. I have not heard the term "pocket cruiser." I like it!

Good progress so far and not too bad under that floor, I've seen worse. The transom is going to be fun.

Hi Jake,

Nice project boat!

If you are interested in a little more power, I have the attached '65 90 HP Starflite. Located in VA. Comes with the selectric shift box and cables. I have not started it and a couple of the internal wires look brittle, fairly clean and all in tact Spins- was looking to get in the $350 range but will entertain an offer, need the space.

thx

Cobia Sea Queen is the make and model of your cuddy cabin, just in case you were unsure of its pedigree.

Mine is a 67 with a 1973 Evinrude 65 HP Looper. It will go 30 mph empty but in my estimation it is underpowered at 65 HP. I haven't seen all that you've posted regarding this project, but I will. Lots of lil' things have gotten in the way of my restoration, but I hope to get started soon.
I need to resole the deck and the transom might need replacement too, just to ensure it is done right.

There are more Sea Queen threads around here somewhere.

@Finstant Gratification Thanks for the info! That is really helpful. I finished up the project in October and we have been out fishing and cruising a half dozen times. The 50 HP I have on there is underpowered, but it works. I will poke around and to see if I can find your restoration on here.

Nice job getting this cuddy back in action.

I hope to do the same with mine, but life keeps making other plans for me.

Congratulations to you.

Your work and video(s) are amazing. Glad to see someone enjoy the fruits of their labor with family and fishing.
Point to be made though.....hold the fish closer to the camera, makes 'em look huge
Congrats on a job well done.
