Classic Boat Show in Wisconsin's Northwoods - Be there! or Be square! Marc is looking for those 60 & 70s tri-hulls to Glass up the event.

We had a great turnout at The Boathouse last year.

Guess I better finish the bunks on my trailer so that I can drag something up there that floats. I will have to read and see if they have shore displays in case what I bring doesn’t float yet. It would be great to see more glass. Seems a few more show up each year. Nice show last year and worth taking my only day off just to see Mama Mia and her owners! The deal still stands for Doc Frankenmerc… if he can fly out, he can stay here free and I will give him use of the 20’ Hydrostream Yoyager YT tunnel vee with the 2.4 Merc for use in the show and to tour the chain of lakes. Maybe Moma Mia could lead the way??? Just throwing it out there. PM me Doc if you are interested! Hopefully a few more Glassic members will show up as well?

Thanks for posting Terry, some magnificent craft there – the likes of which are scarce in other parts of the world.

I see where they are moving the show to Torpy park which is on the north side of the tiny Island city instead of the south side… I said tiny because it is only about 5 city blocks away from old location. I saw where they will have both in-water and on-land display areas adjacent to each other. I need to register for something to drag up there. Terry, did you do that boat parade in front of the ski show grandstands in the evening? Wish I could have stayed for that. Just listening to the jet boat motor running was worth the trip, let alone when many of the inboards do a start up for all to hear. If you love boats, water, people and old fashioned candy, ice cream, popcorn shops as well as good cafes, taverns and restaurants all within a few blocks of the boats, it is a nice event to visit. Mama Mia could use some old Fiberglassics company so hope to see some more members there.

Hello Ken,
If you are up over this Winter come and see us in June.

Hey Mark,
Good shot of the Island City.

Highway 51 cuts through town with The Boathouse at the south end on bottom right and the Minaquabats Ski Show grandstands center. Thirsty Whale and home of the Summer Hummers at lower left and Torpy Park is top center where 51 takes you north out of town.

Mama Mia! was in the parade last year and it was a blast.

I heard from Marc and plans are on again for a Welcome Party Thursday night at Lepping’s Dry Dock.

Lots of great photos at the MACBS facebook page.

The Dr. is in the house. Hope you folks can make it up there again.

Thanks,
Terry

I attended that show for a few years in a row but many years ago. I was thinking about going up again. Was thinking about bringing a 1941 Thompson wooden sailboat for display (she spent almost all her life near Minocqua). But I could bring my classic glass Chris-Craft by Thompson Corsair outboard.

Hello Andreas,

Hope to see you up there for sure and either boat will really add to the show.

Given a choice I’d probably go for the Chris-Craft but with the local history link to the Thompson sailboat it would be an excellent on land display.

Found this in the 1941 Thompson catalog.

Thanks,
Terry

Hey Andreas… if you have the proper tow set up, it is legal to tow 2 trailers in Wisconsin if you don’t exceed total length limits lol. I see pickups pulling 5th wheels with boat trailers or quad trailers often. Maybe recruit another member from the region to tow the other boat for you and bring both??? Ok - either one would be great to see!

Let’s Minocqua

www.minocqua.org/

I can’t wait to get up there if only to eat. Found this supper club right by Patricia Lake just outside town. Nothing like an authentic Northwoods supper club.

www.norwoodpines.com/

And then gotta go back to Ottos. We were here last year, and they have a great Brat. Skinned, butterflied, char-grilled and served with a side of kraut. Imported Warsteiner on tap and of course the Cow.

www.ottosbeergarden.com/sandwiches.html

The Cows we had at The Boathouse last year really hit the spot. Gotta go back there and try the Signature Hungarian Mushroom Soup. Never had it but said to be excellent.

Been to Murtaugh’s a couple of times and is famous for Rueben sandwiches and lovely barmaids.

I sent in my registration form today. That should motivate me to get a few more things checked out and working... like Nav lights if I want to cruise the evening parade display. Hope to see more members with their boats. Hoping for good weather too!

That looks great! Getting 2 more tires mounted for the trailer to prep for the trip. Still gotta do more work to fit up the carpeted bunks. I just looked at their Facebook page for this event and they have some great music groups lined up during the event. Will you cruise the lake chain Thursday before the show Friday? If so, maybe I need to see if I can go a day early…. But only if you don’t mind company. Who knows, maybe I will still be tightening screws and testing the lights down to the last minute.

Hey Doc,
Working on trailer here too getting ready for a long haul.
Planning to be in Minocqua Wednesday and cruise Thursday before the Dry Dock Welcome Party so try to make it early.
Hope to launch here on the lower Fox next week and work out any kinks before heading north.
Thanks,
Terry

Terry - now it looks like we won’t get north until later afternoon or evening. Might not be able to splash the boat until the Friday night boat parade. We will see if we can make the dry dock Thursday evening gathering. I think I read they will have about 60 boats showing Friday and Saturday. Mine will sit on a trailer, so we will just look for Mama Mia sitting pretty floating at the docks. Good luck with your testing and safe traveling. At about Merrill, Wisconsin the hwy 51 dropped to one lane last weekend and was a parking lot. I got off at 64 in Merrill and went one block east and took 47 up through Rhinelander… that northeast route come backs west and comes right into Lake Tomahawk and then Woodruff at 51 in case you need an alternate route if traffic is crazy again. Not sure when that construction is supposed to be done. Who doesn’t love bumper to bumper traffic when hauling a boat on a hot summer day. Coming up before the weekend should help you.

Hey All,
This is like deja vu all over again.

It was a great show. The Torpy Park location worked out very nicely and I believe its on for next year as well. I took lots of pictures up there but after an event I’m usually disappointed I didn’t get more.

FWIW, my pick for Best Fiberglass at Minocqua 2022.

All original 1973 Switzer SS 170

Gregg is the second owner and this was always his dream boat.

Great pics guys thanks for posting. What is the inboard boat with the white/red interior and Chrysler M-413? Century? Very cool, love those hatches above the helm seats.

I looked closer at my original picture and zoomed in on the pier tag. I thought I could read it was a Century Coranado. I googled it for images and found some pictures. I will attempt to leave a link here: www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1962-CENTURY-CORONADO-21-GULLWING-206402 The link says it is fast around 55mph with that big block… I think this is such a cool boat!

Yupper, The Century's had engine choices, mine had an AMC 327 which was 225hp. The Chrysler was an upgrade and then there was the Cal Connel Cadillac engine.
A friend of mine is doing a ground up restore (build) of a Coronado, haven't seen it in about two years but assuming he put another plank on. Taking longer than Waterwings and his resorter

Disco-70’s tri hulls was the featured boat this year in an attempt to Glass up the event.

This Powercat was the one entry that seemed to fit in that category.

And sure enough it was our friends Dr.Go! and First Mate Kim.

Just a minor last minute adjustment. Bigger hammer maybe?

Marcs Power Cat and custom trailer takes FWIW my pick for 2nd Best Fiberglass at Minocqua 2022

Dads club jacket. Seems to be in the blood.

The 65 Merc 1000 short shaft really screams.

Marc took us for a ride in the parade and pulled a sweet hole shot for spectators. I hope someone got it on video.

Thanks for the pictures Terry… we had fun on that evening boat ride with you guys! I liked that show and location, so I am hoping to be back next year! My boat is a daily driver with battle scars and missing paint on the lower unit, but it does run. There were some practically flawless fiberglass examples of original unrestored glass boats that look new and also a great restoration shop had to amazing restored examples. I liked that there was a very wide variety of boat styles, construction materials and ages. Check out this cool set of trim tabs that have twin trolling motors that are remote controlled for fishing in the bay of Green Bay . Owner said they work amazing for controlling that big high sided wooded T T boat… I am thinking that separate control could help you stay on your course even with a funky cross wind… some people have all the cool stuff figured out. It looked like he had a hand held wireless remote.
