TOPIC: Restoring White Rub Rail

Restoring White Rub Rail 1 year 8 months ago #147829

I have a 1966 Shell Lake Caravelle that I am currently restoring. It has white rub rail that has a yellowish, dirty off white color to it currently. I am wondering if anyone knows how to restore the rub rail to it's original "bright white" color?

Thanks and see picture below for your reference

Remove the rubrail and clean with Tilex, which contains bleach. You need to remove it or you won't be able to clean the edges without damaging the gelcoat. I did this awhile ago and finished by using a palm sander with 1000 grit wet or dry paper, used wet, of course. It's a lot of work but the results are worth the effort. Reinstall the rub rail and apply a coat of wax. You might want to experiment first with the small white rubber piece under the Shell Lake emblem.
