Looking to draw on the experience of long time classic boat owners.

Recently started looking at my original canvas convertible top again.

It's 52 years old, complete and has some wear and minor damage. (zipper ripped out of one piece and torn through one of the snaps)

It's made of a heavy woven fabric and the exterior surfaces are covered with a polymer of some sort.

Can you tell me more about the classic canvas material?
Is it still possible to get tops made of this material? (I appreciate it's heavy and does not breathe)
What materials are you using in restoring your classic tops, biminis and stern covers?

I'm familiar with modern materials and have spent a small fortune getting a mooring cover made for the boat out of Sunbrella.

I just has the Amish in Dalton (near Markesan & Kingston) make me a whole new cover for my Shell Lake. Mine had all the same issues as yours. I went with Sunbrella (parchment color, a nearly exact match to the hull gelcoat). Yes, not period correct but a far better fabric. Also, I had the side windows made with zipper panels & screens just in case I want to fold down a seat & sleep on the hook.

Thanks for the response Jim.

I also have been considering having the 'windows' recreated to zip open with screens like many pop-up campers are configured. Any thoughts on the choice of Sunbrella vs others. Sunbrella seems to get routine high marks.

I had it on an '88 SeaRay weekender & it was good. That being said, that boat always lived indoors. Only you can decide, I don't know what he price difference is.
