TOPIC: Advise! Looking at 1st ever boat—‘66 Crestliner

Advise! Looking at 1st ever boat—‘66 Crestliner 5 months 5 days ago #148836

Looking to get into a classic boat with my son. Seller has a 66 Crestlner with a 4 cylinder inboard Mercruiser. Says it was a one owner barn find but it’s been out in the sun so seats are baked.
I know nothing about boats but have been restoring old cars all my life.
Am I nuts?
What should I know looking at this boat. He’s asking $2k but I think he’ll take a little less. Says it purrs like a kitten and is water ready.
Going to see it and put it in the water this weekend. Just want boat that works and I don’t mind doing a little bit of restoration work.
I’d be grateful for any guidance as I am just getting into classic boats.

In my opinion, if it was truely in very good condition and trailer was road worthy (in other words good tires, good lights. Good bearings - just hook up & go) it could be a $3000 boat to the right buyer.
Now the bad news; It's probably not as I just described. Finding someone to work on it will be almost impossible, parts will be hard to find. Yes it is a MerCruiser vs OMC or other brand. BUT, MerCruiser prior to 1967 had several mid year & yearly production changes. Outdrive cannot be replaced with 1967 or newer unless you change the transom plate assy.
Since you are looking at 1st boat & presumably you have no MerCruiser mechanical experience (and particularly pre 1967 MC1 experience) if it runs, not a cracked block so oil doesn't turn into a milkshake, is drivable as is & trailer will
make it home, max $1000

Is there an online add posted that I can view?
Since it's Crestliner I assume you are in midwest. Someone from MN or with sentimental value from childhood memories may pay more.
