TOPIC: Mercury/Super Thunderbolt Mark 58A

Mercury/Super Thunderbolt Mark 58A 14 years 1 month ago #2181

Hi there...
I'm new to your forum and have a 1959 Crosby Capri with a Mercury/Super Thunderbolt Mark 58A outboard and just wondered if it was the original put on this model? Thought someone here might know...

Most of these old fiberglass boats came as a blank slate from the factory. Only a few builders offered models fully equipped with steering, hardware, and power. A lot of the boats were built with a fiberglass mounting pad for the control box on both sides of the hull. the buyer or dealer could then decide on which side to put the helm at, controls, etc. Most boats only came equipped with a couple cleats in the bow and stern, a bow eye, and a couple handles on the transom. Lighting was optional on most boats. Some dealers furnished special pacakges on new boats, the power would be that of the brand they were a dealer for. Someone here may have more info on your particular boat. post a photo please.

That engine is correct for that vintage boat.

* This model was painted all "Cloud White." In addition, Custom Deluxe E & EL models were produced with chrome or stainless steel bands just above and below the wraparound cowl. These were available in all "Cloud White," "Holiday Red" & "Cloud White," and "Bimini Blue" & "Cloud White."
* Model & serial numbers were on the instruction plate riveted to the swivel bracket above and between the clamp screws..
* Serial numbers 1195070 thru 1286084 were 1959 models.
* Mark 58A's were produced as Mark 58AM (Manual Starting, Short Shaft), Mark 58AML (Manual Starting, Long Shaft), Mark 58AS (Electric Starting, Short Shaft, without Alternator), Mark 58AE (Electric Starting, Short Shaft, with Alternator), and Mark 58AEL (Electric Starting, Long Shaft with Alternator).
* It is not clear whether any Mark 58ASL (Electric Starting, Long Shaft, without Alternator) models were produced.
