That's a beautiful old Johnny there commander. Do you know what year it is? I remembered seeing a similar thread not long ago,
www.fiberglassics.com/glassic-forums/main-forum/51-evinrude-use-with-throttle-etc-controller
hope that helps some. (Sorry, I have no knowledge on the subject.)

Basically all you need is an older style Johnrude 2-lever control box (one lever for throttle, one for shift). Any of the Ship-Master (Johnson branded) or Simplex (Evinrude branded) boxes will work. The correct box for your motor would be a red and white Ship-Master box. Try to get the cable ends with the box if possible. The rest is simple plug-n-play. Looks like your motor already has the clip on the throttle side - that stainless hooked thing just aft of the tiller handle. The outer sheath of the throttle cable has a trunion on it that would clip into that. May have a similar clip on the shift side. The moveable ends of the cables then clip on the throttle arm (small arm that is part of the gear aft of the tiller handle that moves when you twist the throttle handle) and shift handle respectively.

Great looking 58 Johnson you got there I want the same one for my Feathercraft Ranger III. That motor is a short shaft model for 15" transoms. If you need a long shaft conversion kit you should place and ad over at aomci.org and you may be able to trade the parts from your short shaft to a fellow who doesn't need a long. The parts needed are: 5" extension for tower, longer drive shaft, 5" watertube extender, 5" longer shift rod (requires taking the LU apart) and that's about it.

Here are a couple of pic.'s of what you'll need. There are 2 or 3 or more sets of controls that will work, and you'll also need a steering adapter w/pulleys.
