TOPIC: Ark Traveler *NEW POST*old thread UPDATED 9/9/15

Re:Ark Traveler..Just got Home found Good and Bad**** 12 years 3 months ago #69694

First thing I'd do is get the outboard off and see if you can get it unstuck. Soak the piston with PB Blaster and leave it sit awhile. Now I'd tear the boat down after I got it off that trailer. Flip it over and start on the bottom. You may want to split the top and bottom. Save them stainless screws, they are damn expensive. Don't think it will be done in a wek. Take your time. It will come along.

Robert gave you good advice. If the motor doesn't loosen up, junk it and move on. If the transom and floor are in good shape, you are not that bad off and it is probably not worth taking the deck off. Is the gelcoat problem on the deck only or on the hull as well? You are a lot closer to being wet that the last thing that followed me home.

is there a technique to help woth the teardown of riveted parts. How can I save the rubrail without bending or ruining it? Just drill em out?

Both are pretty bad, they are cracked and there is a hole under the port stern(see pic)

Looks like you picked yourself a winter project. Nothing is impossible just take it one step at a time and you can do it.

The rub rail on my 59 Glastron was bolted on and I ended up drilling those out. Not sure if the metal frame is worth saving, but I will look at that when the time comes. With rivets, drilling is your best option. Just be careful and take your time.

I am making room in my garage for the winter and I am curious how far to take down the gelcoat. Looking at my gelcoat in its current condition are there any recommendations?

Hey rip did your boat sit full of water? That hole looks like it was poked up through. Maybe had somw wheight in it. I fixed one similar. Someone threw something into the boat. I cut out the bad glass and put two layers over the hole. I filled the hole with Duraglass from the inside and I am going to put a few more layers of mat inside. The outside is done. The rear corner closest has the repair.

First thing I would do is find a cheap fixer upper trailer of the right size. Then sell that one. That one is worth a little money and too big.

Engine looks like a 72' or a 74'. Yes, if it comes unstuck it may be useable. Graphics look too good. Carb should be aluminun and shouldn't have rusted, unless you are talking about the screws.

Robert,I am not sure if water sat in it I would assume thats correct, it was also on a roller trailer that was to big for the boat.

as for the trailer that its on now, it goes with my 20ft center console fishing boat that is lift kept year round. I have a few small boat trailers, one for a jet ski that i will probably put it on to move it around the house.

I am excited to "strip it then flip it" and start sanding just wondering how far to sand it down, and tecniques for fixing the hole.

I would not even bother trying to unstick the motor unless you're planning on tearing it down for a rebuild. Even if you did unstick it, it is likely that the lifespan of the motor could be measured in minutes due to pitting of bearing surfaces inside. A teardown may show that it is as simple as replacing one rusted bearing, or it may show the internals are riddled with rust and not salvageable. Won't know until you do it.

Alternatively, if you like the early '70s look, that cowling will snap onto many years of Johnson and Evinrude 2-cylinder loopers well into the 1980s, which gets you away from the old style ignition and electric shift.

Chine, that is probably what I will do. Right now I am more focused on the hull. I should be able to find a motor around here relativly easily since i am in SE Virginia, Chesapeake bay/OBX/Virginia Beach area. Although I like the idea of using the cowling on later model OMC. I really want to get the hull seaworthy.

To your question on the gel coat, that will have to come off down to the good mat underneath. Some like to put a whole new later of mat over the old, that's your call based on condition and thickness of existing mat.

Transom and floor are seldom in good shape on a boat that old, especially if it was stored outside. Tap test should tell you all you need to know.

****Update***

I spent the morning out in the yard and tore this thinbg apart. Everything went really well, I did however shear off 2 nuts(not to bad considering they have been there and in saltwater for nearly 50 years).

Although I am having the same problem that Normspeed is having. I cant get that damn steering wheel off@!!!
I beatit, pulled it, pushed it, torched it, soaked it in PB and still nothing!! I am about to take an angle grinder to the damn thing. Any more tips that normspeed might need too??

heres the progress...

Hand the wrench over to the qualified person standing in the boat!

Did you try going after it from behind? Sometimes there is a nut on the backside of the spool that you can take off, remove the spool, unbolt the whole mount and then remove the assembly. Once the whole kit-n-ka-bootle is removed it is easier to beat the s--- out of the wheel, Just a thought.

As for the young man in the hull, Its his boat so I must rehab it to his specifications(per his mother).:)

Today, I built a platform that fit over one of the small trailers. and flipped the boat, Now I'm ready to sand it down.

However when I flipped it quite a bit of water started tricking out of some of the holes inside and outside the boat. The boat this feels pretty solid(transom also). I am just worried I am putting "lipstick on a Pig". What do you guys think?

see pictures(the hole in the hull is picture with standing water)

**Update**

After a year of playing on the other boats I thought it was time to get this project going again.

I patched the hole and am filling some small cracks/chips in the gelcoat.

NOW I NEED SOME HELP.

I know there a a few forums on paint vs gelcoat and so-on. But here I go anyway.

I want to roll/paint on the hull. What product do I use? Hardener? Brand? I use my boat is saltwater. Will it hold up? colors? I am looking for an antique/off white.

I am pretty helpless with this step, there are tons of product out there and I dont know where to start.

Thanks for any help.

Can you post a pic of the cable drum under the dash? If it's like my aristocraft, you can remove the snap ring, pull the drum, drive out the dow pin and remove the steering wheel and steering shaft together and then set the wheel with the shaft going into a pipe and drive it out with a brass or copper punch. jim

There are a couple of good threads on the roll and tip method of painting, and what products to use here, not sure how it would hold up in the salt however;

Updated to 11/24/13

Had the boat flipped over. I Put an epoxy barrier coat on the bottom and then several coats of paint. Flipped it back over and sanded, epoxy primer, sanded, painted, sanded, painted. only 1 or 2 more coats and I should be ready to start putting it back together.

I do however need to build bench seats. if anyone has any ideas or have done this before I would love to know if there are any tricks, do's or dont's???

After alot of reading around the old Interweb there are lots of possibilities. I looked at epoxy, gelcoat, paints. I emailed back and forth with a couple of reps from petit and interlux. I decided to use a product called Interprotect 2000e from Interlux to fill in the old gelcoat crazing. After alot of sanding I applied and lightly sanded 3- 4 coats for the hull and 1 good coat for the top.

Believe it or not I decided to go with the $11 a quart Rustoleum topside paint for the topcoat(3-4 coats). I looked around the web and here and found really good results with the topside paint for use even below the waterline, I will let everyone know if I have problems down the road.

the Top is also Rustoleum topside paint for 11 bucks at lowes. I am on my second coat by rolling. It will probably need 2-3 more coats. I had all my spraying equipment ready and I would have had to spray outside and it was a cold windy day so I decided to roll intstead and so far so good.

If your rolling it on, you can still use enamel hardener in the Rusto paint topside.

$14/pint but improves gloss level & hardness (scratch resistance) of the paint.

Thank you for your reply. I will probably use the same primer since I have a lot of crazing And cracks on the boat gelcoat that needs attention. Interesting about Rustoleum did not know they make boat paint. That is incredibly cheap. How long did you wait between each cost of paint?

NJANGLER,
I waited at least a day between paint coats, a week between epoxy coats. the Interprotect seems to be a pretty good product so far(it does a good job at faring the crazing) but its a 2 part(which I hate).

Bryx4ti,

No problem at all. If you have a chance I need some help with my seat dimensions. I plan on building a bench seat similar to your model. I could really use some detailed photos and dimensions if that's possible?

Re:Ark Traveler *NEW POST*old thread UPDATED 10/2/13 11 years 1 month ago #86820

The marine topside paint isn't significantly different then the off the shelf Rusto. I know lots of boats painted w/ it, some w/ & some w/out the hardener. Both above & below the waterline. And at least 1 that used the topside paint for below the waterline, no ill effects.

Most ARE trailered boats, not slipped for long periods of time.

You can spray the Rusto w/ hardener, but you need to be extremely careful & wear ALL the proper PPE. The hardener has isocyanates in it.....
