Nautilus Marine Restorations has just begun the restoration of a 1962 Custom Craft. At some point, large 1/4" thick aluminum panels were installed on both sides of the (rotted) transom and were then fiberglassed-over. In the process of doing this, a lot of cutting and drilling was done that will require some creative remodeling. As might be expected, the floor, stringers and all plywood against the hull were rotted and the floatation could be wrung-out like a sponge. The hull interior is in the process of being stripped bare in order to replace all the structural elements.

The boat will be restored using modern seating and appointments but keeping most of the original style elements. I'll post progress photos as they become available.

Installed two layers of 18mm meranti marine plywood. Panels were sandwiched together with 3M 5200 and installed with stainless screws and copius 5200 on all edges. An additional layer of 9mm sapele will be applied to the exterior prior to replacing the fiberglass on the transom.

Thanks for the compliments. I was going for "retro understated elegance." We're still missing the wrap-around molding and the docking lights still need to be installed but she's ready for some vintage power. I'm waiting for Jim to send me a white Merc!

Don't tell anyone but I think I will steal some of your ideas for my Shell Lake revamp since the entire top deck will be mahogany.
That is one georgeous boat.
