The floor is rotted on my mfg and this winter I'm replacing it.

Here is what I'm going to use. 1/2 inch plastic sheet. Wanted 3/8 but they only had 1/4 and 1/2.

Not bad for "free", huh?

I started testing adhesives on this King Starboard.

I know nothing sticks to it, and the manufacturer says to use mechanical fasteners. But i wanted to see if i can make it work, even if i do not use it for the floor.

So i cut off a 2 inch strip and started playing. I had some 5200 on hand so i started with that.

Here is what they suggest if you need to use an adhesive.

1. sand with 120 grit
2. clean with acetone or similar
3. heat with torch, don't burn or warp just kiss it with the flame
4. let cool and apply adhesive.

So that's what i did. The directions on the 5200 say to wait a week after application. I've had it clamped for a week until today. I did 2 test points. One with plastic to plastic and one with plastic to wood.

Here is what i've found.

After a week the 5200 is cured around the edges where it seeped out. But, between the plastic it is still wet.

It took my weight leaning on the wood to part the bond between the plastics. About 210#.

So i tried prying apart the wood and plastic. It stayed together.

So i attached a pair of vice grips to the plastic and leaned on the handle.

The wood twisted but even putting my weight on the vice grips the bond did not let go! But the wood was about to snap. It's a red oak slat i had left over from building our kid's crib.

So nobody commented on the starboard adhesive success. Interesting.

Anyway here is the boat with the seats out and just starting to remove stuff.

Here are the gunwale boards. I don't think they need more than a cleaning and shine. Also maybe a few nails in the aluminum bead.

So here we go. The floor is thin ply with fiber on top.

The bond let go a long time ago. The glass peels right off the wood.

The stringers are plywood on end attached to the hull with fiberglass "angle iron". And they drip when you squeeze them.

So when I replace the stringers do a similar setup or is there a better way?

Hear are some more pictures. It looks like the floor surface plywood was applied as 2 foot wide sheets. You can see in the first two that there are board placed horizontally every two feet and that is what the floor was screwed to. There is glue on top of the stringers.

I'm sure i just repeated common knowledge, but it's all new to me! . .

I would need to remove the entire top half, not just the deck at the bow. I was trying to get away with not doing that. I don't have room to store both halves of the boat.

This is a lot of fun.

Everyone is telling me to pop the top. I've been reluctant because I want finish by spring. :-)

I bought an osculating tool and started cutting out the old stringers. Those tools are great.

Hopoento work on it tomorrow. I'll get some pics.

Here are some pics of my progress.

I've removed one stringer so far. The last few feet came out in one piece, but the part under the seat was to rotten. I was able to get the front 6 inches out. So, once i measure the length of the stringer i think i can use this as a template.

I have most of the floor out. There is some clean up work to do with the oscillating tool. Everything on the port side is out, but starboard need some touchup.

I've found that the floor sits on the hull near the freeboard. There is an indentation that is the outer part of the tri-hull. The floor spanned this little cavity and attached to the hull with just fiberglass tape on the top. This is the darker area to the right of the picture.

Also, what is that black stuff growing on the fiberglass that looks like roots? some kinda mold?

NO, that is not a bullet hole!

There has been some speculation about the transom. I drilled that hole on the inside of the transom near the bottom. The wood that came out was NOT rotten! Also, i probled and did not find any rot.

If you look at the following pictures, I think someone may have worked on the transom. Let me know what you think.

This is a picture of the transom. The area on the left is the splash well in front of the motor. That glue that is coming out looks like a polyurethane adhesive to me. It does not seem like resin.

Also, the horizontal line under the exposed board is a layer of plywood. It seems there are two layers of ply.

Something you can't see in this pic is that there appears to be grinding behind the splash well, on the piece of plywood. In an area the i can not imagine getting an angle grinder.

Also, the paint in this area seems like spray paint, not the harder paint on the other areas of the interior of the boat.

Here is a pic of the back of the bilge area.

Note the paint. Looks like spray paint. And the bilge area is bright white. The material is thicker than the fiberglass and harder.

Last one today. This is the side of the bilge. Its hard to see, but there is about an 1/8 inch thick white coating that is NOT resin and fiber.

Wish I had a portable saw mill. I have a dozen white oak trunks laying around. Each one is 12-15 feet long and 18 inches around. Make some great stringers.

Well the wives are a definite distraction. Many boats used white oak for stringers. Shame there isn't a rough cut mill in your area. Keep up the good work

So the dirty work is done! All the old floor and stringers are gone!

I have a question about removing vinyl. There is some of the vinyl glued to the gunwale under the bow. It was behind a bulkhead that was under the dash. I'm going to move that bulkhead forward to give more leg room when sitting. Its not structural so it shouldn't matter.

Anyway since it was never in the sun the glue didn't let go like the rest of it. So how do I get the vinyl off the gunwale?

Congrats on (almost) completing the de-construction phase!

You might try (carefully !) heating the glue with a heat gun and using a scraper or putty knife, D. Just a thought, others may have a better idea?

I can't believe we were riding around all summer on these stringers. They felt more like cardboard than plywood.

You can see that i've used the old ones as a template. After cutting them i did a test fit and they seem fine.

I plan on putting on a couple coats of wood preservative before they are glassed in. I have a few wood preservatives i've used on other projects that i've applied to a piece of scrap. After it dried i sanded it and applied some fiberglass and resin.

Here you can see my great-uncle's sabersaw. I've had it for about 20 years. Have had new ones and none of them cut as well as this beast.

You can unscrew that handle at the top to add lubricant. The shaft the blade attaches to moves straight up and down, no vibration.

Besides working on getting registration on the powercat I have been working on the floor. Just have not had time to post progress.

I glassed in the stringers and support and added foam. All wood is treated with rot inhibitor.

As a side note for anyone doing this for the first time.... Take off the top. Getting the rear floor to fit and getting stuff under the bow was a pain.

I fitted the floor but need to glass it in place and do the fiberglassmatt and carpet.

After seeing the plywood in I'm tempted to just screw it down!

I added an extra oak bulkhead and supports under the steps.

Don't worry Mark, wouldn't actually do it!

You may notice that the foam isn't up to the top. I plan on trying some minimal expanding foam on top just before I put down the plywood. I've used it in similar projects and am sure I can do it without bowing. Should add some extra barrier to keep moisture out. I'll test on one panel before I do the whole thing.

One of the books I read mentioned putting vents in the floor above the center channel but under the bow. Said it promotes airflow when the plugs out. What's the thoughts on that.

She does deserve that for all her loyal service. Once i'm done the sole of the MFG and get motors on the 'Cat I'll do that on a rainy weekend.

Speaking of the sole, i just finished treating the plywood. It'll dry by the weekend and I'll start layin' 'er down!

Oh, and i ordered some blue carpet. Decided against some kind of paint... Shows to many flaws...

Not that there are going to be a lot, just don't want to get the sole cosmetically perfect enough for paint finish. I saw some pics of floors with different non-skid rubbery coverings and didn't like the look.
