16Again Topic Author Offline Senior Boarder Posts: 176 Karma: 4 Thank you received: 0	Got this 6cyl Merc on a boat I acquired recently and was told it was a 85hp model and the faceplate bore that out. However after researching the serial # 1757532 I'm more inclined to believe its a 100hp model. Can anyone definitively tell me what it is? Sometimes the serial number can leave you scratching your head.
The best way to confirm whether it is a 90ci 850E-1 or 1000 is by carburetor number.
KC-3A for the 850E-1 and KC-1A for the 1000. The smaller bore 76ci 850E has KA-16A carburetors.
Another quick external difference is that the 850E-1 has a thin stainless steel baffle plate, and the 1000 has a cast aluminum baffle plate that is about 3/32" thick. (port side exhaust, the piece between the port cover and the block)
Both the '63+ 850E-1 and the '63+ 1000 probably have TIGER cast onto the starboard side of the block.
