I have a 1963 Mercury 850 in need of a new home. The last time I ran it was about 2 years ago. It ran good but it is starting to have problems going into reverse. Forward and neutral are fine. I am assuming that it needs a shifting cam in the lower unit.
I don't see a need for me to keep it any longer since I bought a motor from Cal's (62 Saber)nephew to replace it.
I would like to give it to anyone interested, and just ask that a donation be given to this site. I live in La Crosse, Wi. Send me a P.M. if you are interested. First come, first served as long as transportation is workable.

Wish I were closer, I would trade you a nice 500 shortie for it. Been looking for a 63' 850 for years.

I am in the middle of making arraignments with Frog. If that doesn't work out for some reason I will let you know. I know he wants it, but we are working on getting it to him since we are quite a few miles apart.

Hi Bill, I am going to a family reunion in Savanna Ill. on the 26th of June and will be returning on the 27th. I could pick it up for him and take it up to St. Croix Falls for him. I think he is less than 2hrs from there.
Of course this would add about 1 1/2 hrs to my travel time and I would have to drive up on that damn curvy Hwy 35, enjoying one of the most scenic drives along the mighty Miss, Wisconsin has to offer.
If he does't reply to this post I will try to contact him. Gene

Gene,
Thanks for the offer, but it looks like the deal with Frog isn't going to happen for now. This is great the way everyone offers to help when they can.
Tim, if you are interested in my 850 contact me with a P.M. through this site or just put up a reply here. We will see if we can work something out.

I have one boat that I would like to get done and the merc from bill was going on to a different project, that I will not get done so I hope the motor goes to some one who will use it. Gene, we talked about my rocket, if you want it please contact me. thanks to bill for the offer of the motor, and thanks to gene for the offer of the delivery . greg

Sorry to hear that it didn't work out for anyone so far. If it is still up for grabs, it would probably look great on the back of my '63 Lone Star Triton. Probably fit and perform better than the '79 Johnson 55 hp

I am in Green Bay, but my girlfriend has family that live in La Crosse. I can have them pick it up and hold it till I swing down to pick it up.

Just let me know. Thanks!!

Whoever can make arrangements first. I just want it to go to someone that will use it and not just sell it. I am not in a huge hurry to get rid of it, but I am not going to use it and would like to see someone else use it. Let me know what we can work out, but remember it weighs about 250 lbs.

Bill, I talked to the spine specialist today for 1/2 hour, still have to go to his office on Friday. If you still have the merc towards the end of july I will be able to drive down to your place. But if it is gone that is ok. Old age sucks. thanks greg

Here's the deal - I would use the motor on a boat that will need a new transom to hold the 850. That boat is currently third in line for boat projects. So i would probably not have a spot for that motor until 2017 unless I double up on transom projects this winter. I think that Cal might shoot me if I throw another "pop the top" project at him, I already have him lined up to help with the gut and rebuild on the GT-150

However, I could swing by and pick up the motor in a couple weeks without a problem. If you want it moved before then I can have it gone in a few days and then pick it up from my girlfriend's family in a few weeks.

I would love to put that motor on the back of the Triton, but don't want to get in the way of Frog if he could use it sooner. Not sure how we resolve this. Maybe Frog and I should wrestle for it - best out of three falls! :P My backs not the best, but I haven't had to go see the bone cutter yet!!

Mark, I would love to have the motor, but it would just set in my man cave for a couple of years. so you go for it, and when we meet up you can buy me a beer. best of luck on your boats. frog

Re:Motor Give-away 8 years 4 months ago #123370

Thanks Frog!! I will make sure it gets put to good use on the Triton, and you can bet I will buy you one or two. Maybe next year I will have something ready for the 2nd annual boat show! I'll buy you and Cal one if you are there.

Bill - I dropped you an email regarding the specifics for pick-up. Let me know if you don't get it.

Thanks!

Mark, I got the e-mail and sent you my address. It is not a problem to hang on to it for a little while. I just want it to go to someone that will use it. Like I said in the e-mail, maybe you could throw the website a couple bucks to help out.

I could tell right away it was going to a good place. And as long as you stay under your own power both ways, there is no such thing as a bad day on the water.
